Army gift history in Mckeesport, Pennsylvania began with the enlistment of men for troops during the Revolutionary War. In 1779, General George Washington ordered the construction of a military fort at what is now Mckeesport. The fort was named Fort Cumberland and served as a strategically important outpost for the patriot cause. The fort was also used to store munitions and supplies for the army. In 1814, the army moved from Fort Cumberland to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas Territory. At this time, there were no towns in Virginia Township outside of York County. However, because of its strategic location and its connection to Philadelphia, Bethlehem Steel Company decided to establish a town in Mckeesport called Bethlehem Steel City. This decision led to increased trade between Pennsylvania and Mexico and helped support American efforts during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The soldiers who fought in the Mexican-American War received various gifts from civilians living near their barracks at campgrounds throughout Illinois and Missouri Territories. One such gift was an apple tree which stood on a farmstead east of Springfield, Illinois until 1889 when it was moved to Lebanon Valley Park in Mckeeeport after being donated by Mrs. Edwin Laddington Ritchie. After sitting on display inside her home for many years, it finally arrived at its current site adjacent to Lebanon Valley Park on July 16th, 2006 after more than three decades of waiting!

Mckeesport is a small town in Mckeesport County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mckeesport were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on their "Nova Di Giacomo" in 1569. They named the river by its estuary, the Monongahela River, which they sighted from their ship as it passed downstream on its way from Scotland to North America. The name given to a bend in the river where this ships Passage crossed (the present-day day intersection of Butler Avenue and State Road 7) became known as "Verrazano's Bridge". At one time there were several villages located around what is now Mckeesport: Hagleyville, Greencastle, Midlandville, Carrick & Peebles and even Kutztown! Today only two remain: Hagleyville and Midlandville. Each had a post office which served residents within their respective boundaries; however all but Midlandville have since been annexed into other municipalities or are no longer extant entirely – HagleyVILLE being incorporated into Allegheny County while GREENCASTLE got absorbed by Beaver County; MiddLETOWN was annexed by Westmoreland County MIDLANDVILLE having merged with McCandless Township in 2006
