Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. The population was 5,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bethlehem-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of coffee in Lower Burrell date back to 1753 when Colonel John Trimble and his detachment of troops stopped at an inn on the Susquehanna River while they were repairing their unit’s equipment. They brought along some beans from Turkey and these soon became popular among soldiers and civilians alike. In 1814, Captain James Henshaw built a mill here after purchasing land from the Trustees for $1,000 cash. This mill later became known as Trimble & Henshaw’s Coffee Mill which still operates today. In 1865, Lower Burrell was given its current name by local resident Drury Rogers who decided that it would be more appropriate if the community had a name that reflected its location - Lower Burrell being “the lowermost point on the Susquehanna River”. Throughout much of its history, LowerBurrell has been an agricultural community with extensive production of corn, beans and other vegetables up until recent times when manufacturing has taken over as the dominate economic activity here. Today there are several small businesses located throughout this charming town that continue to serve local residents with quality products including coffee

LOWER BURRELL was first settled by George Washington and his family in 1754. He named it for Colonel Nicholas Lower (1712-1760), a captain in British forces who had served as commander of Fort Necessity on the Monongahela River during the French and Indian War. Colonel Lower's heirs founded Upper Burrell Township in 1838. The village of Lower Burrell was organized in 1892, and became a borough in 1903. Borough status was revoked in 1935 due to its small size; however, it regained borough status in 2009. The borough has been governed by a three-member board since 1933, with one member being chosen from each of the three wards: central (northwest), northwest, and south/southwest areas. In September 2017 residents voted to annex more than 1/4 acre (1 hectare) from neighboring Upper Burrell to form an "interim" community called Belle Isle which would house additional police officers and other services for residents living on Belle Isle until a permanent community can be established there permanently
