The Navy has a long and proud history in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania. The community was founded by Quakers in 1775, and the first navy ship to be commissioned in the town was USS Constitution on December 13, 1797. In 1893, Lower Burrell became the home of the United States Naval Observatory. This institution has been important for both national security and scientific research ever since. Today, the navy operates two destroyers and one submarine in LowerBurrell waters. In 1947, Lower Burrell became home to America's only naval air station - NAS Whidbey Island. NAS Whidbey Island played an important role during World War II as a strategic bomber base that supported American forces in Europe. Today, NAS Whidbey Island is home to four HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and six AN/Ash-7BIdentification Radars. Lower Burrell also boasts a thriving commercial fishing industry which employs many local residents. The fishery is well known for its bright red sea trout and other fresh seafood items. In addition to fisheries activities there are also extensive farming operations conducted on some of the most productive properties withinLowerBurrelthespoken word "Auraria." Auraria is an orange juice concentrate manufacturing plant located just outside of LowerBurrell on Upland Road. Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania is a small town in the United States located in Westmoreland County. The population was 2,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Lower Burrell was founded in 1784 and named for General John Forbes Lower, commander of British forces during the American Revolution. The first settler in Lower Burrell was James McGill who arrived in 1784. He built a log cabin on a stream near present-day Upper Burrell and started to grow maize and other crops. In 1814, he sold his land to John Pemberton who developed it into a farmstead with two-story houses and roads. By 1820, UpperBurrell had also been established as a village with several stores and homes. In 1827, when Pittsburgh was founded as an incorporated city, LowerBurrell became part of Pittsburgh but continued to be served by its own post office until 1840. In that year, mail services were transferred from Pittsburg to Allegheny County and LowerBurrel lost its status as a village withinPittsburgh limits. However, it regained its former status as an unincorporated community within Westmoreland County by 1860. In 1865, lowerBurrell began to experience increased settlement due to coal mining interests which led to the growth of industries such as meatpacking and baking powder production along with many other small businesses over time including paper mills and tanneries among others. The population reached 3,000 by 1920; however most industrial activity ceased after World War II followed by economic decline which has caused much social deterioration over time culminating in local poverty today among some residents although there are efforts underway for revitalization including new housing developments .

In recent years, little has been done to preserve Lower Burrell's history or architecture. In fact, many of the town's buildings have been replaced by more modern structures over time. This lack of preservation has caused some to wonder if Upper Burrell – which is much older and has more traditional architecture – may be better suited for hosting similar events such as festivals or historical celebrations related to its namesake general or America's revolution period

In 1907, Lower Burrell had a population of 350 people. In 1925, Lower Burrell had a population of 1,000 people. In 1990, the population of Lower Burrell was 514 people.
