It is composed of reserve components from all 50 states and D.C.. As of October 2016, there are over 146,000 Guardsmen in service across the United States. When President George Washington called for a national guard on July 1, 1776, he envisioned a force that would protect America's borders and prevent its enemies from invasion. The first national guard units were raised in 1777 under General Nathanael Greene and served until 1814 when they were disbanded because of their small size. In 1815 Congress created the Infantry Department which organized militia units into battalions or brigades and divided them into corps which served in war theaters around the country. In 1865 Congress passed an act providing for organizing and arming a continental army consisting of not more than thirty thousand men with artillery, cavalry, and infantry; also providing for calling forth twenty thousand men from twelve states who should be enrolled therein at once; these volunteers being known as "Volunteers State Militia." This organization was called "the National Army" though it never numbered more than six hundred men strong due to lack of appropriations at times and other difficulties encountered by Governor Blair in organizing it effectively. In 1866 Congress authorized two additional regiments (one each from New York City and Philadelphia) to enter this newly formed army but no battle took place until September 14th when Union troops attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina resulting in nine killed including three generals commanding the unit- an event later referred to as "The Battle of Gettysburg." In December 1861 President Abraham Lincoln called for three squadrons (comprising about fifty infantry soldiers) to be raised to provide security along the southern border with Mexico while Confederate forces attacked Ulysses S Grant's Union army near Vicksburg Mississippi attacking seven hundred Americans both killed or wounded before finally withdrawing on January 9th 1862 following information received by Major General James Longstreet indicating Confederate intentions towards West Memphis Arkansas where several hundred thousandstrate had been assembled just south of town prior toGrant's arrival preparatory thereto On November 15 1865 a regiment (3rd U S Illinois Volunteer Infantry) was ordered eastward along Iuka River Tennessee towards Muscle Shoals Alabama enroute to Little Rock Arkansas when word reached camp that Mobile Alabama Garrison had opened fire killing Federal officer John Fenton one day earlier what became known as "The Alamo Massacre". On April 12 1886 Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest proposed creation of Provisional Military Government if state seceded from Union led by President James Kellar within hours after news arrived about Texas' secession race rioting taking place at San Antonio Texas killing sixty five Texans primarily African American civilians feeling threatened by white English speaking settlers . The Lower Burrell National Guard has a rich history in the town of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania. The unit was first organized on December 12th, 1802 as a part of the Militia of Pennsylvania. The first national guard unit in this area was the Upper Cumberland Dragoons. This unit served in the War of 1812 and later fought in the Mexican-American War. For many years, these units were used for garrison duty and training purposes only. In 1912, however, an act was passed Congress which called for all armed services to be brought under one command. As a result, the Upper Cumberland Dragoons becamethe 1st Battalion of the 2nd Regiment United States National Guard (LowerBurrell). In 1933, during World War II (WWII), Lower Burrell residents volunteered to serve in various military units across America. Most notably, these volunteers worked with local companies within the 3rd Infantry Division which participated in Normandy and Germany Operation Overlord. After WWII ended, most members of this battalion retired or were recalled to active duty and served until 1959 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts by then President Dwight D Eisenhower. However, some individuals from this battalion still remain today as reserve officers with other state militias throughout America including at Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Department where they continue their service along side law enforcement officers from other counties
Lower Burrell is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the lower reaches of the Susquehanna River. The name Lower Burrell comes from a Welsh word meaning 'bridge over water'. Lower Burrell was founded in 1754 by pioneers of the early morning trade with New York City. A mill built in 1814 became the first cotton gin in Butler County and one of America's leading sources of milled cotton for export. In 1868, Lower Burrell was renamed to honor John P. Lower (1819-1893), an American politician who served as Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln. Today, Lower Burrell is a vibrant community with a strong commercial presence and excellent educational opportunities for its citizens. Lower Burrell is a small town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown–Easton–Westmoreland, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lower Burrell was first settled in 1798 and named for Colonel John Burrell. In 1802 it was renamed after Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Burritt. The town developed around a Methodist church and school which were built in the early 1800s. In 1892 LowerBurrell had its own Post Office and became an incorporated village in 1893 with a population of 599. After World War II the town declined as manufacturing left for other centers such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh; however, some businesses have kept operations going including a primary school, library, grocery store and two banks (one national). In recent years there has been interest in reviving LowerBurrell as a tourist destination with attractions like an ice cream parlor, history museum and summer concert festivals attracting visitors from all over Lehigh County.
