Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania is home to one of the most significant maritime gifts in American history. The town was founded by Members of the United States Congress on December 12, 1824 as a Naval Academy town, and soon became known for its naval shipyards. In 1828, Lower Burrell donated two tugboats – the USS Constitution and USS President – to the United States Navy in memory of Commodore George Washington. The ships were used to tow warships into Charleston harbor during the First Barbary War. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Lower Burrell contributed eight cannon to the garrison. The town also played an important role during World War II. In 1941, Lower Burrell donated twelve Liberty ships (the USS Constitution and USS President were repurposed as troop transports) to the U.S. Navy in order to supply troops fighting in Nazi Germany. After the war, Lower Burrell became an important center for maritime gift giving again. In 1989, LowerBurrelldonated nineteen fiberglass boats (including five submarines)to help promote economic development throughout the region

Lower Burrell is a small borough in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in Lower Burrell was John Armstrong who arrived in 1781. Lower Burrell was incorporated as a borough on July 1, 1869, from portions of the now defunct Allegheny County. The borough seat was located in what is now Upper Burrell until 1957 when it moved to its current location. In 1898 LowerBurrell lost its rights to be included within Allegheny County and became a part of Pittsburgh Township. In 1907 the township changed its name to LowerBurrel after founder Samuel Wertheimer's father-in-law, William Lowery Burrillo (1768-1862). The economy of Lower Burrell relies heavily upon manufacturing and service industries such as petrochemical companies and food processing plants which are located throughout the boroughs close proximity to one another.
