Lansdowne is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Lansdowne is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle–Norfolk metropolitan area. The first mention of Lansdowne occurred in 1668 when John Lansdowne and his family took up land on the south side of the Susquehanna River. In 1795, Peter French bought from James Logan a parcel that included what is now Lansdowne Township and then organized it as a township in 1812. During World War II, General George Custer's unit was based at Mansfield Barracks here before moving to Fort Monmouth on Long Island in 1943. In 1903, the Pennsylvania Railroad built its alignment through Lansdowne and other townships along their line from Scranton to Harrisburg. This made for easy access to markets in central Pennsylvania and helped contribute to the growth of Lansdowne over time. Lansdownsie Furniture Co., founded by Nicholas Fenton in 1892, remains an important part of local life today as one of only two remaining furniture dealerships in Lancaster County (the other being Sockwell Hardware). The store has been family-owned and operated ever since by four generations of Fenton heirs: Nick’s great-grandfather Abram Fenton opened the store on Market Street back in 1876; his father Adam Fenton ran it until his death in 1957; his grandson Barry Fenton continues operations today with help from three assistants; and older brother Darrell runs the store’s online presence under the name "Darrell’s Fine Home Goods." Some notable customers over time have included First Lady Barbara Bush and U2 frontman Bono.; Today Daniel “Dani” Fenton manages all aspects of day-to-day operations as Chairman Emeritus while his wife Pam still works full-time at home with their children—Jessica (24), Nathan (22), Ethan (20) —and grandchildren Brooke (15) and Owen (13). Lansdowne is a town in western Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,021 at the 2010 census. Lansdowne is part of the Allegheny County government and is bordered by Armstrong Township to the north, Westmoreland Township to the east, Erie County to the south, and Butler Township to the west. Lansdowne was first settled in 1795 by Capt. John Lansdowne and his family from England. Some of these early settlers were: Captain Jameson (1796-1833), Samuel Fenton (1798-1858), John McNulty (1800s), Christopher Mansfield (1802-1844), Isaac Hecker (18021 8/24/1828), Nicholas Warneke (181S1 9/5/1834) and Zebulon Pike ( 1807- 1892). In 1800, a post office called "New Kensington" was established in what is now Armstrong Township; it was discontinued in 1837. In 1838, an act of Congress directed that all towns within Allegheny County be chartered with a board of trustees; this became effective on July 1st of that year. The original trustees were namesake Captains Jameson and Fenton as well as Nicholas Warneke. The first permanent settler in Lansdowne was Simon Pugh who arrived on February 12th, 1795 from London via Pittsburgh with his family including four children under five years old - Mercy Jane Pugh born March 7th 1795, John Anthony Pugh born May 2nd 1796 †April 25 th 1800; Elizabeth Ann Pugh born October 3rd 1800 ; Philip De Witt Pugh born December 15th 1800 . One hundred years later on November 26 th 1906 by Act No 2 of 1906 §2(a) which provided for consolidation among several adjacent townships - all but one being located within Armstrong township along US 11 – voters approved incorporation into a new borough form – named Lansdowne Borough – incorporating over 1,500 people through an election held on November 26 th 1906 such as George Wickenburg president & treasurer; Josephine Atherton clerk & trustee* On April Fool’s Day 1909 when Borough had grown too large for existing boundaries it petitioned for statehood under provisions set forth in Act 10 of 1909 §§1 et seq.; this request also passed unanimously resulting in designation as a city upon becoming operational On January 1 st 1913 following passage by General Assembly no 1536 §1 Definitions section paragraph 6 And effective date thereof January 1 st 1913 *Josephine Atherton Clerk
Lansdowne was platted in 1792 as a part of the newly created Township of Lansdowne. The name is derived from the word "lans" meaning meadow and "down" meaning bottom. The first settler in Lansdowne was Nicholas Goodrich, who arrived in 1793. In 1812, the Township of Lansdowne was expanded to include present-day Philadelphia County. In 1838, Lansdowne became a part of the new City of Philadelphia. The population of Lansdowne grew rapidly during the 19th century because it was located near major railroads and port facilities. In 1868, the Township of Lansdowne merged with neighboring Chester County to form Delaware County. In 1917, when Philadelphia annexed eastern Montgomery County, Lansdownsie became an enclave withinPhiladelphia proper. It continued to experience rapid growth until World War II when its population decreased by half due to military service and displaced persons policies enacted by the Allied Powers. After the war, there were no more gains for Lansdownsie until 1990 when it regained its lost land withinPhiladelphia limits through annexation by North Philadelphia Boroughs
