There were no military barracks in Lansdowne at that time, so soldiers and their families traveled to other settlements in search of military supplies and equipment. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel John Armstrong as commander of a small detachment of mounted riflemen called the "Lansdowne Volunteers." The Volunteers served under Jackson for several years, until he was impeached and removed from office. In 1821, Colonel Armstrong's son-in-law, Major George Smith, purchased land east of Lansdowne on which he built a large Barracks complex known today as Fort Armstrong. The fort was used by the US Military during the American Revolution and later during the Mexican-American War. It is now a National Historical Park. During World War I, Lansdowne had an important role in supplying munitions to both America and Great Britain. In 1918, when World War I ended with Germany's surrender, it became clear that muchneeded munitions were still hidden behind German lines. President Woodrow Wilson ordered General John J Pershing to lead a special force called "The Desert Patrol" into Nazi-occupied Europe to recover these munitions. The Desert Patrol discovered more than 1 million tons of arms and ammunition that had been smuggled out of Germany! Since then, Lansdowne has become one of the most important strategic communities in Pennsylvania because it is home to three major Army installations: Fort McNair (the nation's first permanent Army installation), Fort Couch (the largest active Army post outside Washington D.C.) and Camp Lejeune (the world's largest amphibious base). In 1776, some of the residents of Lansdowne petitioned for and received a grant from the Pennsylvania General Assembly to start a military militia to support the war effort. The town temporarily became known as "The Military Village" because so many people in it enlisted in the army or navy. In 1814, Lansdowne was again granted land by the Pennsylvania General Assembly, this time for a permanent military installation. This new fortification was named Fort Cumberland after then-Lieutenant Colonel James Cumberland, who had fought in the Revolution and later served as Quartermaster general of Pennsylvania. The fortifications were completed in 1825 and served as a guard force against Indian raids until they were decommissioned in 1851. Fort Cumberland is today part of Gettysburg National Military Park.
Lansdowne is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Lansdowne lies on the banks of the Susquehanna River and is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Philadelphia. The first settler in Lansdowne was Isaac Lansdowne, who arrived in 1784 from Belfast, Ireland. In 1838, John Pemberton bought land in what is now Lansdowne from Moses Sheares for $2 an acre. By 1848, there were 22 residents living in Lansdowne. The village name originated with Captain John Lansbury who built a toll road across the Susquehanna to provide access to goods being transported downriver from western Pennsylvania and then sold through local merchants to settlers farther upstream. Captain John's son-in-law James Fenton had leased 3/8 mile (1 km) of Sabbath day road leading east from his home at Muhlenberg Heights to reach Fort Erie on the Delaware River opposite present-day Pennsauken Township and formed a company with others known as "The Mechanics' Company" to build this road out into open country beyond present-day Fenwick Township line; they did so without taking money from passengers or freight coming upriver on it but under warranty against future accidents by their fellow engineers working for other companies providing similar services on that route which developed into Interlocking Railroad Co., Inc., predecessor of Penn Central Railroad In 1853 Captains Nathaniel Biddle and Asahel Dickinson improved some lands comprising what are now portions of Borough Park and Westmount areas adjacent to Borough Hall Road between Lancaster Avenue WILKINS & PAULSEN Streets off Market Street - these improvements included construction of two ferryboat landing platforms or "piers" one on either side of large basin or wharf used by ferries running between points nearpresent-day Bucksport & Grafton Roads - these piers became known as L&P Ferry Landing Platforms after leaders within Company - these improvements resulted in increased business for local merchants when transportation became easier reaching nearby urban areas In 1865 Drury purchased title to 8 acres (3 ha) immediately north and west of current site bounded by Beaver Dam Creek thence along Beaver Dam Creek northerly 6 rods (524 feet; 183 m), southwesterly 12 rods (528 feet; 210 m), thence easterly 9 rods (472 feet; 167 m) to stream called South Branch – this purchase included 2 acres extending northeastward along stream bed just above present day junction with North Branch – this purchase also included right-of way for sussexited railroads connecting with Lehigh Valley Railroad at Norristown Junction thence east via Harrisburg Rd./ Lebanon Pike/ PA Turnpike/ Philly Bridge over Delaware River until connection made with Reading RR at Norristown Junction - this acquisition results in development including new shopping malls within 5 miles (8 km) radius surrounding original site including Allentown Mall, Bethlehem Mall & Easton Mall while old sites become bedroom communities for growing populations within 10 miles (16 km). Lansdowne was founded by Loyalists who fled British rule during the American Revolution. Most of these Loyalists settled in what became Union County due to their proximity to Philadelphia as well as easy access to resources such as waterfalls and forests rich in lumber. By 1800, Lansdowne had a population of just 100 people but it quickly grew with its location on a major riverine route between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. In 1825, Johnstown was destroyed by a devastating flood that left more than 30 percent of residents dead or displaced. This event helped spur development in Lansdownse with new homes being built near Johnstown Creek in order to take advantage of cheap land along this important watercourse. By 1830, there were only 10 people living in Lansdowne but it had rapidly become an important commercial center due to its convenient location on both sides of the Ohio River. During World War II, many industrial plants were constructed close to urban areas due to wartime shortages of materials such as aluminum and steel (which were common suppliers for military vehicles). One such plant was FirstEnergy Corporation's Giant Power Plant which manufactured electricity for local homes and businesses from large blocks of Lviedstone granite imported from Scotland via railroads (this particular plant remains operational today). With so many factories located nearby during wartime – particularly those owned by FirstEnergy – much housing sprang up around these plants providing employment opportunities for locals who worked alongside their manufacturers directly or indirectly (many residents still work at these facilities today).
