Some of the earliest evidence of coffee brewing in Lansdowne comes from a letter dated 1793 from John Penn to his brother Benjamin. In that letter, Penn mentions beans being roasted at home and selling "to all who please." In 1801, a group of Europeans visited Lansdowne and tasted the coffee there. They were so impressed that they ordered more and brought back beans for shipment back to Europe. The first printed recipe for cup of Joe was published in 1806 by Nicholas-Jacques Coster in an Amsterdam journal. Eventually, many small shops opened up around Lansdowne and began roasting their own coffee. By 1840, there were over 15 businesses located in town with over 100 employees! Roasting and marketing their own coffee became very important to these businesses as it allowed them to stay afloat during difficult times. The popularity of cup of Joe led to other variations such as creamsicles, smoothies, muffins, pastries etc., which continue to be popular today. A typical cup of Joe contains about 8 ounces (227 milliliters) of ground coffee and is available in three different strengths: light, medium or dark roastings. It can also be flavored with peppermint extract or chocolate milk powder. Lansdowne, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,864 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. Lansdowne is located on the south side of Scranton and east of Wilkes-Barre. The first settlements in what is now Lansdowne were made by farmers who came overland from Pennsylvanian towns such as Girard and Westmoreland. In 1798, John Hays founded a mill in what is now Lansdowne after purchasing land from the estate of Ebenezer Saunders. The first post office was established here in 1814. The community acquired its name from General Nathanael Greene during the American Revolution when he named it forGeneral David Allen's farm near Yorktown Heights, Virginia. On November 4, 1800, General Washington delivered his inaugural address here in front of his home which still stands today as Lansdowne House Museum (formerly known as "Washington Hall"). In 1815-1816 Lansdowne voted to secede from Pennsylvania and join the Confederacy; however, this vote was revoked because many residents were Loyalists or had changed their affiliation since then. A schoolhouse and several other buildings were built here during this time period but they are no longer extant due to damage caused by flooding during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. What is now Lansdowne began to be developed as a commercial center around 1920 when an ice cream company called Ben & Jerry's opened its first store here followed by other businesses including a gas station/convenience store/marketplace and a few homes until it all collapsed following a natural disaster on September 11th 2001 which destroyed much of downtown Scranton with extensive loss of life and property damage estimated at $60 million dollars ($120 billion adjusted today). There have been several efforts over time to redevelop or reestablish some form of civic engagement or cultural programming within the townspeople including but not limited to: revitalization projects for former Ben & Jerry's stores along Race Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue; creation or activation of public art installations throughout various parts of town; establishment or continuation of annual events like carnival fun runs (held every July), Harvestfest (a fall festival featuring arts & crafts)and traditional fireworks shows on October 31st each year just prior to Christmas; development or launch into business ownership by local entrepreneurs who can offer unique services related to local history etcetera etcetera etcetera... However these endeavors have failed due largely to lackadaisical attitudes among some residents who see nothing wrong with living within their means while others continue clinging nostalgically nostalgically to an earlier time when things were more simplex easierx less complicatedx blah blah blah... Consequently until recently there has been virtually no real effort being made towards creating community engagement through organized programming within Lansdowne despite ample opportunities given... Lansdowne is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. It was organized as a borough in 1824 and became an incorporated town in 1847. Lansdowne is located on the southern border of York County and is bordered by Lebanon Township to the east and south, Westmoreland Township to the west, and Armstrong Township to the north. The name Lansdowne comes from two places: Lansdownen near Ligonier in Hampshire County (now Ontario) and Downey Manor near Easton in Berks County (now Delaware). The first part of the name may derive from Latin "lantes" meaning "downs" or "downslow," while the second part may come from Old English "dunce" meaning a forested area with wooded hills. Lansdowne began as a borough on November 10, 1824 when it was created from parts of Armstrong Township and Westmoreland Township. On July 14, 1847, it became an incorporated town when all township borders were adjusted to include land that had been annexed by other towns since 1795. At its peak during World War II, Lansdowne had a population of 6,898 people; however, after 1945 it declined steadily until 1990 when its population reached 1,539. Today nearly all residents are living within York County outside of Lansdowne's boundaries. One significant event that took place in Lansdowne occurred on October 15–16th 1915 when over 2 million troops from many countries participated in World War I between Canada and Germany at Yonge Street Station just east of downtown Lansburg (now Altoona). Many businesses closed down due to soldiers being stationed there for months at a time with no work available nearby. In 1918-1920 much more typical factory work opened up thanks to Wilson Machine Works being established just northeast of downtown along Beaver Creek Road though unemployment remains high today especially among younger adults who have not worked outside their homes since adolescence This event helped spur growth for both downtown Lansburg which experienced an influx of new businesses while Altoona saw rapid development including construction of several large factories including Alcoa Aluminum Company Bethlehem Steel Corporation American Paper Mills Peabody Coal & Coke Company Allentown Brewing Company PPG Industries
