Lansdowne is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,959 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Lansdowne is located on the Delaware River and is bordered by Chester to the north, Delaware Township to the east, Temple University to the south, and Montgomery County to the west. The name Lansdowne comes from a location in England called Lansdowney (before it was changed to Lansdowne), which means "farmstead near downstream." John Davenport founded what would become Lansdowne in 1724 as part of an effort to establish a new township for his farmlands around Newtown Square. In 1750, John Davenport's son-in-law Edward Mannion bought 1/4 of acreage from Nicholas Goodrich for $8 per acre. Goodrich had been given it by Governor William Tryon as a gift from him in 1688 during King George II's War of Independence. By 1800, there were only about 60 acres remaining in present-day Lansdale Township but over 2 million acres (10 percent of all Pennsylvania land) had been surveyed and patented since 1784 when James Logan established one of America's earliest land grants system with resulting townships named after British nobility and royal families In 1812 Father Pierre Trudeau led a group of French Canadian missionaries who began evangelizing among the Native Americans living along what would become known as “the Delaware River Valley” including those living near where Lansdale now stands. After reaching Strasburg Heights on July 14th1812 they camped for three weeks before continuing their journey downriver on foot through dense woods until finally reaching open water at Cherry Point where they built their first church – St Mary’s Anglican Parish Church. They continued preaching throughout that year before finally returning home by September 12th 1812 having baptized over 200 natives including both Algonquian and Iroquois peoples who still live along that stretch today The first settler in what would become Lansdowne was Nicholas Goodrich who arrived there in 1750 from England via Bethlehem PA following his family’s move there two years earlier from Stratford upon Avonlea (now Worcester). He erected his own small cabin soon after arriving although he did not remain permanent because he ran into financial difficulties due mainly to canal construction activities across town back then Goodrich’s grandson Samuel Goodrich donated 3/4acre(40acres)of good farmland adjoining his grandfather Nicholas Goodrich’s estate within modern day Ansonia Township adjacent to present day Frankford Borough limits on July 10th1785 for use as pastureland or agricultural settlement according to map dated November 23rd 1785 prepared by Joshua Barney for General Assembly at LancasterPA . Samuelgoodrich made significant contributions also unto western sectional government here especially thru donation & erection of public building mentioned below . This property became known as Lantsownee or later: Lansdowndee & eventually: Lansdale Borough tieing into downtown Philly area.– Deacon Nathan Weisberg writes [in]History Today: "SamuelGoodrich donated 3/4acre(40acres)of good farmland adjoining his grandfatherNicholasGoodriches' estate within modern day Ansonia Township adjacentto present day Frankford Borough limits on July 10th1785 for useas pastureland or agricultural settlement according to map dated November 23rd 1785 prepared by Joshua Barney for General Assembly at LancasterPA ." Lansdowne is a small town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Lansdowne is part of the Lansdale–Hazleton Micropolitan Statistical Area. Lansdowne was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Lansdown and his family. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1824, the name was changed to Lansdale after General John Niles Lansdale, who played an important role in the American Revolution. In 1848, the town became a borough with a full vote of residents and remained so until 1955 when it became a village again under Title 8 of the Pennsylvania Statutes. The first store in Lansdowne was built on Main Street by Captain James Henshaw and his wife Sarah about 1800-1801. Captain Henshaw's store continued to be open until 1830 when it burned down due to fire from a burning tree near present day Hebrew School Road & Streetsboro Road. A new store was built on West Third Street about 1832 by George Fenton and continued operation until 1840 when it also burned down due to fire from a burning tree near present day Welsh Lutheran Church Road & Northumberland Avenue. Another store opened on Main Street about 1850 by Nicholas Lapp and operated for many years before being destroyed by arson in 1898. A millinery shop opened on Third Street about 1860 by Mrs Jane Forster which continued operations until 1865 when it too caught fire from an unknown cause causing much damage including much loss of inventory as well as destroying numerous windows throughout its entirety). A grocery store followed suit on Fourth Street about 1870 by Elisha Goodrich which operated untilabout 1880 when it also caught fire from an unknown cause causing extensive damage including all but two floors of building along with significant loss of inventory as well as large quantities of flour, milk, butter and other perishables stored within). Finally, another grocery store opened at 5th & Market Streets about 1890 named "The Grosvenor" after Evans Bros., Merchants Agency (now known as Giant Eagle)which operated until 1911 when it also caught fire from an unknown cause resulting in considerable damage including most of the building collapsing although only around 10% collapsed). Hebrew school (now known as Bethlehem Baptist Church) began serving students there circa 1798 with Reverend Samuel Smith officiating at its beginning; however classes did not begin routinely residing inside the school house proper until 1811 following some improvement work done there during Revs William Booth’s ministry while Superintendent Of Schools for that area In 1824 Borough Bill No 9 passed providing for incorporation into Township – this would provide for incorporation into agencies such as “Borough House” etc.; however this never happened given that no one wanted to move or join any such entity given that they felt their current township rights were more than enough without additional responsibilities/powers bestowed upon them - instead citizens voted separately via Election Day 25 September 2424 largely because they felt their rights rather then joining forces with either Borough Head or Township Head would have been lessened thereby compromising their autonomy should something ever arise regarding their special interests within Township titles etc.. As mentioned earlier Township status quo remain largely unchanged through succeeding decades despite numerous requests/opportunities brought forward both orally & written throughout various governing bodies over time primarily because citizens feel they possess more than enough powers already within title 8 without additional responsibilities conferred therein eregardless of whether or not they actually do so… This has led directly to several notable aspects within our community presently most notably: 1) aforementioned refusal / refusal even now amongst some members of governing body(s) ever officially annexing any lands/ territories beyond what are currentlywithin Township limits duly registered & taxed pursuant thereto notwithstanding ongoing verbal agreements between respective parties thereto); 2) high level economic disparities between neighbouring communities effectively remaining unaltered despite repeated requests (& invitations) made both orally & written throughout various governing bodies over time especially considering that each community essentially boasts 3-4 times greater population densities yet still lacks nearly every single recreational amenity afforded adjacent communities comparable size notwithstanding efforts made repeatedly over recent decades BY respective Governments TO rectify this situation; 3) relatively low crime rates relative to adjacent communities even though each experiences occasional outbreaks emanating FROM outsiders particularly criminal elements coming accessto ingredients / resources necessary FOR illegal activities particularlyrxmingly tax evasion…) Despite these identified issues several measures have been recently enacted OR proposedaviating said discrepancies viz.: 1) establishment OF An Ethics Committee specifically charged WITH reviewing all ethical questions surrounding township business eregardless thereof arising out OF jurisdictional boundaries; 2) gradual increase restricted voting power granted unto elected officials vis-à-vis citizens respectively through increased staggered terms approachng expiration eventually leading eventually TO abolition outright via majority vote ); 3) creation OF A Land Use Board detailing precisely allowable uses INCLUDEING residential property usage ; 4 ) establishment OF An Economic Development Authority specifically empowered WITH developing economic opportunities thru investment / trade corridorsFROM adjoining communities similar sized yet lacking same amenities offered local counterparts……………..
