The Lansdowne Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized on December 12, 1776 in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. The regiment fought in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. After the war, the regiment became a part of the United States Army. The regiment served in various engagements during the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War. On July 8, 1898, General Ulysses S. Grant led an army to victory over Mexico at Tehuantepec while commandeering artillery from the 1st Rhode Island Regiment batteries. In World War I, the regiment fought in trenches along front lines in France and Belgium. After World War I ended, many soldiers returned to their home states but others remained with units in California and Texas throughout World War II. The unit was disbanded on September 2, 1946 after serving nearly fifty years of duty within the United States Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).

The Lansdowne Regiment was one of the original United States Army regiments, formed in 1782. It served throughout the American Revolution, and fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. The regiment was disbanded in 1815, but re-formed under different name in 1847. The regiment served as part of the Union army during the American Civil War, and eventually decommissioned in 1865. It was reactivated again in 1881 as a National Guard unit, and remained active until it was abolished in 1898.
Lansdowne is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Lansdowne is known for its manufacturing and agricultural industries. The first settler in Lansdowne was Nicholas Lansdowne, who arrived in 1785 and purchased land from the Lenape Indians. In 1825, John Beattie bought from Nicholas Lansdowne a parcel of land that included present-day Lansdowne. He developed it into a small town nameakes after his farm home village of Laundown near Bathurst in England where he had been born in 1784. In 1827, James Fenton bought two tracts of land adjoining those owned by Beattie to form what would become the Township of Lansdale. In 1830, Charles Goodyear laid out a road through his holdings to bring produce to market and make trade with other settlers in the surrounding areas. In 1835, John Hays built a sawmill on Mill Creek between present-day Market Street and Prospect Avenue and began producing lumber for local homes and businesses. By 1840, several stores had opened up along Mill creek as well as an hotel which burned down in 1851 but soon replaced by another business called The Hotelers Arms which still stands today across from Glenarm Cemetery on East Lynn Drive

Lansdowne is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,993 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lansdowne was founded by Andrew Lansdowne in 1795 and named for him. In 1825, the town became a borough; in 1889 it became a village. The name "Lansdowne" comes from an early settler's farmstead on the Big Creek located between present-day Lansdale and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The first post office opened in 1795 and was called New Harmony (now Altoona). The current borough was formed on April 14, 1922 when the villages of Lansdale and New Harmony were merged into the new township of Lansdowne; this merger followed a decision by the Pennsylvania General Assembly to split Lackawanna County in two following an election campaign promise by then-Governor John Dewey to do so. At that time, only Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Township had a population over 5,000 people while all of Lackawanna County had a population under 10,000 people. Lansdowne is known for its lace culture which began as early as 1795 when Andrew Lansdowne started making lace curtains out of white cotton twine brought over with his shipment of fabric from England. Catskill lace has been made here since about 1800 by nuns who ran a convent near where Lansdownse Boulevard now runs (the convent closed in 1961). Today most catskill lace is exported to countries such as Italy and France but some still goes handcrafting way back home in Lackawanna County where it can be found at local antique stores or online
Lansdowne was founded in 1795 by John Lansdowne and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Biddle. It became a borough in 1802. The first mayor of Lansdowne was George Armstrong.
