The Enterprise had been placed into commission in 1940 as USS Lexington (CV-2). On December 7th of that year, Lexington sailed from Norfolk with a shipment of military supplies and equipment from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Included were six M1917 Browning machine guns, two Lewis Gun Tubes, one 10 inch torpedo tube and five depth charges. The ship arrived at her destination on January 9th 1942. The Enterprise's stay in Europe was not as long as expected; she departed Norfolk on February 15th 1942 bound for Lorient, France. Upon arrival there she disembarked her cargo and passengers before sailing back to America on March 3rd 1942. She made port of New York City on April 5th before completing her voyage to Hampton Roads where she arrived on April 26th 1942. The Enterprise's stay in Virginia was brief; she left Hampton Roads for Guantanamo Bay Cuba on October 2nd 1942 and arrived there the following day. From Guantanamo Bay the Enterprise sailed back to America via Acapulco Mexico where she arrived at New York City on October 16th 1942. On November 1st 1942, while escorting Convoy PQ-27 out of Long Island Sound en route to join PQ-28 off Newfoundland they met an enemy submarine which caused all but four of their crew members including captain James WolkowitzTo abandon ship and make their way upsteam using lifejackets and submersible clotheslines to do just that! What followed is one of history's greatest naval disasters; over 60% of the crew died during their attempt to save themselves!
