The name of the town comes from a place called "Lansdowne" in London, England. Lansdale's early history is intertwined with the history of its namesake city in England. John Lansdale migrated to America in 1798 and started the first cotton gin near present-day Lansdale on Lancaster Creek. In 1814, he married Susanna White (1781-1857), who had emigrated from London four years earlier with her family. Together they founded what would become one of the most important towns in Montgomery County – home to mills and a number of businesses – until their death just over 60 years later.
