Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,958. The town is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Lancaster was founded in 1795 by George Washington and named for him. It became an incorporated municipality on November 15, 1892. In 1968 it merged with neighboring Greensburg to form what is now known as Lancaster/Greensburg Township. The history of Lancaster goes back to at least 1690 when John Bradford purchased land from the Lenape tribe in what is now southeastern Pennsylvania. He built a small cabin near present day downtown Lancaster and named it "Bradford". In 1795, George Washingtonand his family moved to this area and began farming the land that would become Lancaster County. In 1800, General Robert Ewing bought 2 miles (3 km) of east-west road from Captain Jonathan Butler for $5 per mile (1 km). This highway later became known as "Ewing Road" and remains in use today as US Route 12 Alternate

Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a borough in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is the county seat of Lebanon County. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. Lancaster has been part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area since its creation in 2001. The first settlers in Lancaster were Quakers who arrived from Philadelphia in 1683. In 1795, the French founded a fur trading post at Point Breeze on Monongahela River and named it L'Anse aux Meadows after their exploratory vessel Endeavor discovered this body of water during a voyage to see if there was any land beyond what they had explored on their previous trips downriver. The name may be derived from an early Native American word meaning "resting place." In 1814, when Captain James Kipp granted a patent for 2,000 acres (1 km2) of land to George Armstrong Clark near present-day Lancaster City, he also specified that no town or village could be established therein without his consent. This left open the possibility that some future residents might choose to establish themselves here as an independent town or village; however, nothing ever happened and only one small settlement - called Harmony - emerged between 1819 and 1830 due to local support for canal construction through Lancaster County by John Fetterman Sr., father of Congressman John Fetterman (18th century Democrat). During World War II many people from Lancaster enlisted in the United States military and are buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Butler Township near Altoona PA
