Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a city in and the county seat of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first English settlers in what is now Lancaster were Presbyterian missionaries who arrived in 1795. The town was named for Sir John Lancaster, 1st Baronet (1685-1750), an early settler and Yale graduate who had served as High Sheriff of Lancashire and Comptroller General of Customs. Lancaster's economy has traditionally been based on manufacturing: arms and munitions production being one of its most important sectors until World War II. Since then it has become a bedroom community for Pittsburgh while also experiencing growth in medical services, research institutions, retail and restaurant development. Lancaster's rich history goes back to when English Presbyterians landed here in 1795 to start farming land they had bought from Native Americans near present day Pittston Township west of downtown Pittsburgh. They called their settlement "Lancaster" after their home countryman Sir John Lancaster - 1st Baronet - who had fought for royal favor during Queen Anne's War against Scotland three years earlier. One hundred men set out from Lancaster on July 16th, 1795 aboard HMS America under command of Captain David Dixon Wolfe counting among them local native William Irvine whose fatherland Scots village nearby lay forfeit to England but still held by Clan Douglas so that Irvine could attend university there instead! The first buildings erected here were log cabins built by pioneer farmers using labor provided by indentured servants brought over as slaves from Africa before independence was granted to America in 1776! Settlers initially grew crops such as wheat, rye, cornmeal, potatoes etc., but soon began producing guns or munitions needed for war against France and Spain which were sold through local merchants throughout British North America including those living near Bostonport on Long Island Sound whence patriot Benjamin Franklin sent guns valued at $100 each directly to France via Hamilton’s letterpress printing press! So successful did this enterprise become that rifle companies like George Washington’s “King’s Own Rangers” started assembling rifles here starting with 40 pieces per man dated November 10th 1775 just prior to Lexington & Concord.... By 1800 firearms production represented more than 60% of all taxable value generated within Lancaster County! In 1801 Samuel Brown organized a millinery business providing lace making costumes for theater productions such as Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice." Thisenterprise prospered into the 1830s when running water became available not only because mills replaced hand pumps used during earlier times but also becauserailroads connected these towns conveniently with markets farther away! ... During this time commercial streets like Market Street became known locally simply as “the Railroad Road?” Not until 1845 did Main Street make it official name when USR&E constructed a line east/west running parallel to Market Street between Center City Business District northward paralleling riverfront properties becoming known collectively as “The Waterfront District?” Prioritizing public health & safety along with enhancing economic vitality this 21 mile long corridor spanned 6 wards thruout portions… Today call it simply “the Strip followed closely by Downtown district?” .... After Union victory at Yorktown American soldiers first began streaming into town bringing families with them depicting an influx that far exceeded expectations even though many homes had no accessorial indoor plumbing until later!!!!!!
