Lancaster is a small city in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 44,688 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lancaster County. The first European settlement in what would become Lancaster County was by colonists from England who landed on the southern shore of Delaware Bay in 1681. They named their new town " inflammable," meaning "not to be burned." In 1792, when Township No. 8 was organized within present-day Lancaster County, the township's first postmaster, James White (1757-1827), donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse. When Pennsylvania became a state in 1802, Lancaster became its second county Seat and its seat of government until 1899 when Philadelphia took over that role. In 1800 John Fenton built a mill on the Susquehanna River just east of downtown Lancaster; it would later become known as Fenton Mills. By 1824 mills had been erected at Mechanicsburg and Hazleton; these were joined by another mill at Allentown in 1829 and by 1840 there were six mills operating in eastern PAbaughshire alone. The Panic of 1837 destroyed much manufacturing activity throughout the region but did not affect Lancaster; however, many factories closed because of competition from Illinoisugar Refining Company (ICR) products exported to Great Britain during that period via Liverpool dockside operations which made smuggling difficult or impossible without detection In 1865 Benjamin Franklin Dormer founded Dormer & Company dry goods store moved into newly constructed First National Bank building on Main Street near where it still stands providing business services to local farmers through lending and marketing programs until 1978 when it merged with Citizens Bank to form CitizensBank/First National Corporation which has since been dissolved
