Lancaster is a city in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 20,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Lancaster County after Reading. Nazi Germany's concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau is located in Lancaster. The first known permanent settler in what is now Lancaster County was Nicholas Pym, who arrived on horseback from England in 1681. He founded a small village named Pymstown on the edge of present-day Yorktown Township, about east of where he lived and south of where Lancaster now stands. One hundred years later, John Gambrill built a Log Church near modern day Cross Keys on the Susquehanna River for himself and his family. In 1876, James Brady donated land to build the first local high school which opened in 1877 as Central High School (later renamed Keystone High School). By 1920, Central had become part of what would become Lancaster County government and was renamed First Regional High School before being renamed again to its current name – Lancaster Community College – in 1984. During World War II much of downtown Lancaster was destroyed by bombing raids from Dresden to Liverpool; however, most buildings still stand today including the old Philadelphia Mint building which served as barracks for RAF Bomber Command during World War II and housed one of English Prime Minister Winston Churchill's private residences until it burned down in 1957. The Arabs also took note of this and started roasting their beans onsite. The Monk’s Coffee Company was founded in 1876 by Selim Neuman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At first, Monks only roast pure Arabica coffee beans but soon they began to roast other types of coffees as well such as Sumatra, Java and Colombian Harvester. By 1912, Monks had opened three shops in New York City; one each at 23rd and Madison Streets and Herald Square. In 1916, Monks moved his company to Chicago Heights, Illinois where he operated until his death in 1951. After Monks’ death, his son Harry continued operations under the name Monk’s Coffee Company until it merged with Peet’s Coffee Corporation in 1969 to form Peet’s Coffee & Tea Corporation. Today all three companies operate as separate businesses with different brands under one roof: Peet’s Coffee & Tea (owned by Nestle), Monk’s Coffee Company (owned by Peet's) and Starbucks (owned by Dunkin' Donuts).
