It has been part of the United States since 1776 and is one of the oldest towns in America. Lancaster was founded by John Dickinson in 1765 as a small village on the Susquehanna River. In 1814, it became a town and was incorporated as a city in 1907. Lancaster is home to two universities: The University ofPennsylvania and Temple University. It also has several factories, including Arboretum Industries which makes apples, Lancaster County Paper Company which makes paper products, Lancaster Steel Works which manufactures steel products, and Lancaster Broadcasting Corporation which operates WGAL-TV (NBC) and WDAS-FM (FM). The history of Lancaster goes back to when John Dickinson first set foot on American soil. He arrived with his family from England in 1765 aboard the ship "Eagle." John Dickinson had vision for what America could be and wanted to make sure that this new country would be run democratically by its citizens. He organized an expedition to explore western Pennsylvania because he believed that this land could be used for agriculture and industry rather than just pasture for cows and horses. After exploring many miles of this territory, they found that there was not enough land available for development so they decided to move their settlement further upriver into present day York County. In 1768, they founded what would become known as Lancaster proper - now located within the city limits of Philadelphia - on the lower Susquehanna River. There were only around 100 people living here whenJohn Dickinson made his first donation towards building a church over Memorial Day weekend in 1769! In 1814, when Philadelphia was created as an independent city, residents of Lancaster voted to become part of it too - something that had never happened before in Pennsylvania! The vote resulted in incorporation as a city under the name “Lancaster” on July 1st 1907! This impressive feat took many years due to financial issues but finally saw fruition after Mayor George Biddle successfully lobbied for City Hall space inside what is now Penn’s Main Campus buildings – giving us our current skyline! Over time more factories were established within Lancaster itself including those making apples from scratch at Arboretum Industries; making paper products at: LCC Paper Company; manufacturing steel products at: Lancastrian Steel Works; while WDAS-FM (FM) maintained local programming until 1990 until becoming WWJZ-AM effective August 15th 1996 – today known as WTCD-AM!.
