Kingston is a small town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first people to live in Kingston were the Lenape Indians who arrived there about 1675. They built their own villages until 1714 when they were forced by English settlers to move west and into what is now Erie County. The first white person to arrive in what is now Kingston was John Trimble in 1730. He mined coal and set up a mill on the Susquehanna River. In 1802, the town was incorporated as Kingston by an act of Congress under the name of "Milton." In 1824, during the Mexican–American War, General James Kapp ordered his army to march through Kingston on its way to Gettysburg. When they reached Kingston, some soldiers stopped at a farmhouse while others continued on foot through woods and fields beyond it to raid homes and steal food supplies that had been cached by local farmers. As soon as news of this invasion arrived in Philadelphia, Mayor Nicholas Wright appealed for help from President Andrew Johnson but no assistance came; instead Kapp's men burned down three houses near Kingston before turning back around eveningfall without arresting any residents or seizing any food or munitions. This event became known as "The Raid." Kingston was also home to one of America's earliest cotton ginners – Elijah White – who operated a gin located along Third Street between High Street and Market Street from 1811 until 1830 when he moved his business across Fourth Street into new facilities built by wealthy shipping magnate Samuel Morse Sr.. In addition to cotton production, other early businesses included leather tanning (the Blackstones tannery being established in 1828), real estate brokerage (the Baldwin firm being founded in 1829), insurance (the Nowak & D'Auria Insurance Company being founded in 1830) and carriagemaking (Isaac Nichols started making carriages out of wood at his shop on High Road). During World War I, over 1 million troops served within Jersey City before moving southwestward into Bucks County towards Point Breeze where they began training for battle against Germany on Long Island Sound—a distance of more than 100 miles (160 kilometers).
