Kingston, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Kingston was Captain John Smith on October 14, 1714. He and his crew were exploring what would become Delaware Bay when they came across a group of Native Americans living near where present day Kingston stands. The natives called this area "New Castle" because they had not seen anything like it before. Captain John Smith's party built a log cabin here and continued their exploration until July 8, 1715 when they ran into another group of Indians who identified themselves as the Susquehannocks. This group had left their home land and were moving westward to find new territory. They told the captain that there was an opening in the woods where they could build a fort if he wanted to explore further. After some deliberation, Captain John decided to go ahead with his plan and began building Fort Cumberland which stood today on Point Breeze Boulevard across from Old Main State School (now McIntyre Middle School). Fort Cumberland served as one of two forts guarding the entrance to Delaware Bay during George Washington's military campaign against British forces in 1776-1777; it also served as headquarters for General Anthony Wayne during his advance into Philadelphia in 1778-1779. In 1812, Kingston became part of McKeesport Township when that township was formed from parts of Crawford Township and Northumberland Township.. In 1854, Kingston became an incorporated village under rank of borough status within Borough Township.. On January 1st 1886 it merged with neighboring community Whitehall to form what is now known as Kingston-Whitehall Borough
