Kingston, Pennsylvania is a small town in the Susquehanna Valley of western Pennsylvania. The population was 5,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first European to visit Kingston was Captain John Smith on his 1624 voyage from England to North America. He named it "New Netherland" after his homeland in that country. In 1718, when George Washington and his party visited this area, they discovered a group of Lenape people living near what is now Kingston and called them "the Indians." They were able to purchase land from the Lenapes and establish themselves as farmers. In 1814, General James Kountz invaded this area during the Mexican-American War and burned many homes here while he pillaged through nearby Monaca Township. The community's only building remaining today is the Old Post Office building which served as a jail until 1906. In 1881, steel mills were built in Kingston by Carnegie Steel Company with help from American Industry Development Corporation (AIDC). These mills employed over 1,000 people and produced more than 100 products including railroads tracks, bridges and trucks. The mills closed in 1968 but left an important legacy on the community with their plant buildings still standing today along with other remnants such as automobiles being manufactured there for years before production moved to Mexico City. Kingston, Pennsylvania was first settled in 1736 by the Bowker family. The area that now makes up Kingston was part of the Susquehanna River valley and was named after George Washington's home town of Alexandria, Virginia. In 1824, the Kingston Township Act was passed which designated Kingston as a township in Indiana County. The township seat was moved to present-day Kingston in 1871. In 1892, the name of the village changed from Kingston to Monongalia because it had been proposed by a group of farmers who felt that Monongalia had more resemblance to their home state of Ohio than York County, Pennsylvania did. The name change wasn't permanent and reverted back to Kingston in 1907. The history of Kingston dates back to at least 1736 when its founders arrived on the Susquehanna River Valley for settlement purposes. George Washington's original home town, Alexandria, Virginia served as inspiration for this new community and its founders were drawn to its location on high ground above rapids which provided easy access to trade between Indian tribes and European settlers. By 1800, there were around 100 residents living in downtown Kingston while farms extended out across the riverbank into what is now York County. In 1824, following creation of Indiana County, Kingston became one of several townships within that county and remained so until 1941 when it lost its status as an independent municipality due to changes within Indiana County itself. During World War II, many jobs were created in manufacturing plants located throughout western PA thanks largely to wartime production shortages caused by prohibitionism abroad and America's war effort domestically.
