Johnstown is a small town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located right on the Susquehanna River. The population was 9,501 at the 2010 census. Johnstown became a stop on the National Railroad System in 1869 and has been served by Amtrak ever since. It is also home to the Johnstown Steel Plant which provides jobs for many people in the community. The town was founded by Nicholas-Jacques Demarest and his brother Amos Demarest in 1795. They named their settlement after John, an ancestor of theirs who had settled in what is now Maryland about two years earlier. In 1827, Nicholas-Jacques' son Pierre built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river and started trading with Indian tribes living along it. He also began construction of a road from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh that he called "The Road of Life." In 1830, he erected a wooden bridge over the Susquehanna River near present day Johnstown to connect his trading post with Pittsburgh's port at Point State Park (now Conshohocken). In 1836, Peter Cooper built one of the first millsinery stores in America at what is now known as Cooper's Mills; this store became one of America's most popular shopping destinations for women until it closed its doors in 1957. The industry declined during World War II but later revived when steel production resumed following World War III. At its peak production around 1970, Johnstown employed more than 1,000 workers at three mills and four plants within ten miles of each other! By 1990 however, all three mills were mothballed due to dwindling demand for steel products and competition from cheaper imports; today only one mill remains open (the old Andrew Mill) with some limited operations providing employment for local residents. During its heyday as an industrial center JOHNSTOWN TOWNSHIP was home to 3 MILLS AND 4 PLANTATIONS! Today ONE MILL IS OPEN WITH SOME LIMITED OPERATIONS PROVIDING EMPLOYMENT FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS
