The Johnstown National Military Park is a national military park located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The park was established on July 6, 1955 and includes the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Soldier's and Sailor's Memorial Building, Fort Cassius National Battlefield Site, and the Johnstown arsenal. The fort was built in 1814 as an artillery stronghold on the Susquehanna River. It served as a Union garrison until 1862 when it was surrendered to Confederate forces. The fort continues to house museum exhibits about the history of the area. The town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania was founded in 1796 by the families of Captain John Patterson and Colonel George Washington. The community was located on the Susquehanna River and quickly became a center for commerce and industry. In 1834, Johnstown was made an incorporated city and has since experienced many ups and downs during its history. EarlyJohnstown businesses included a flour mill, tannery, gristmill, foundry, sawmill, bakery, clothing store, cotton gin, distillery and blacksmith shop. By 1860 the population of Johnstown had reached 521 residents. However during the American Civil War Johnstown played significant roles as both a military post and Union supply depot. After the war ended in 1865 local production declined until it again rose in the late 19th century thanks to new industrialization along the Susquehanna River region. During this time Johnstown also developed into a major tourist destination with several hotels/motels being constructed including one that still stands today known as The Park Hotel. In recent years there have been efforts to revive some aspects of Johnstown's past including hosting annual Fourth of July celebrations as well as celebrating traditional events like Maypole Time etcetera which are typically held at nearby Carbondale or Wilkes-Barre respectively
