Tactical coffee first originated in Indiana, Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. At that time, coffeehouses were a common place for soldiers and civilians to meet and discuss military strategy. Coffee was also used as a form of currency among these groups. The first coffee house in Indiana, PA was called the Soldiers' Home Coffee House. This coffeehouse served both military and civilian customers. After the Revolutionary War, many soldiers relocated to Pennsylvania and started their own businesses. One such business was the Captain's Coffee House in Philadelphia where Captains would buy coffee from farmers near their homes and serve it up at their establishments. In 1792, a group of militiamen from Delaware County named themselves the "Mechanics of Newark" and founded an independent company known as "The Corps d'Armée de la Paix". This company purchased two lots on Broad Street in Philadelphia and began to roast coffee beans. The first cup of tactical coffee brewed at this location is thought to be dated November 3rd, 1792 which is celebrated as Soldier's Day in Delaware County. Soon after, other cafes began opening throughout the city including The Colonel's Tavern on Market Street which served troops with hot drinks while they waited for orders or during combat operations. As America became embroiled in war more frequently, each state developed its own branch of the armed forces with its own unique regulations governing how caffeine could be consumed by servicemen and civilians alike (eGarrison Rule #1). As a result of this changeover, many American soldiers stopped drinking tea before deployment so that they could maintain strong energy levels for combat (Kempner 1974). Additionally, various types of munitions used during wartime required higher levels of caffeine than usual so café owners began to offer special coffees featuring greater amounts of stimulants such as caffeine blackstrap molasses or Dutch chocolate (Fletcher 1820; Shafer 1958). A second wave of Starbucks locations cropped up starting around World War II when people realized thatCombat units might need some extra pick-me-up if deployed long periods without access to caffeinated beverages (Nelson 2002). Coffeehouses continued serving function until just after World War II when they were gradually replaced by barsbecued food items like hamburgers or hot dogs (Larson 1986). Since then there has been little continuity between Tactical Coffee history within different parts of America due largely to differences in social norms surrounding caffeine consumption pre-internet days
