The first settler in what became Hermitage was Abram Ewing in 1781. Abram's grandson, John Ewing, purchased land east of present day Hermitage from William Pittaghy in 1802 for $1,100$. John built a log cabin on his property which he named "Herschelstown". In 1806, Stephen Girard built a gristmill on the stream that flows through downtown Hermitage. In 1815, Amos Funk founded the First Presbyterian Church in what is now Hermitage and served as its first pastor until his death in 1840. Reverend Samuel Parkhurst also served as pastor at this church from 1830 to 1840 before moving to Huntingdon Township for another five years. In 1824, David Daugherty arrived from Ireland and began farming near Hersheycongrunds Creek (now known as Monongahela River). In 1830 he started dairying on the creek and eventually bought surrounding land which included today's Hermitage village boundaries. In 1839 he married Anna Hackett and together they started raising chickens on their farmstead which later became known as "Hackett's Farm". A post office called "New Hope" was established at Hersheycongrunds Creek in 1865 when George Stephenson opened an express mail service between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia via Hershey Congrunds Creek valley route #2C (now USRoute 422). When Stephenson closed his business down in 1870 due to competition from railways those living near him founded the "Hermitage Post Office" (1871-1872) which still exists today with mailing privileges only for residents within 1/4 mile of its original location - one mile beyond that was necessary for delivery by wagon across open countryside! As word spread about this newPost Office there were numerous applications received for membership but only two members were ever inducted into the organization – Mrs H C White & Mr W G Gibson who resided just north of present day Shepherdsville along Beaver Run Road . After many years serving notice expired & no new applications being filed nothing changed except name so official New Hope Post Office closed Sept 3 1914 !! From then on it was simply called "Hermitage Post Office" !!

Hermitage is a town in Snyder County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,663 at the 2010 census. Hermitage was founded in 1785 by John Hermitage and his family. It is named after Sir David Brewster, 1st Baronet of Herriotstown. The first permanent settlers were John Hermitage and his family who founded the town on July 16, 1785. The following year, they named it for David Brewster who had recently become a British nobleman with an estate in Ireland. In 1802, John Hermitage died suddenly and bequeathed his entire estate to his son-in-law Nicholas Biddle. In 1814 Nicholas Biddle sold the town to Elijah Hicks for $2,000 cash which he used to purchase 640 acres (225 hectares) of land east of the Susquehanna River for $25 per acre. This gave rise to what is now known as "Hicks Township". In 1827 Isaac Backus donated 100 acres (40 hectares) of land north of Hicksville so that people could build their own homes without having to share with other landowners. This donation increased when Backus became an owner of the anthracite coal mine near present day Brentwood Shopping Center later called Anthracite Coal Company Mine #1 which opened in 1829. In 1830 Elijah Hicks built what is now known as the easternmost building in what are now hermitage Township - this structure was originally known as "Hicksville" but later changed to its current name because it was located inside then newly formed Hicks Township limits according to law at that time. On February 22nd 1870 Abraham Lincoln visited Hicksville while campaigning for election as President of the United States and spent two days there giving speeches before returning home via stagecoach on Sunday evening February 24th 1870 less than two weeks after being elected President!
