Hermitage is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,237 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. It is named after General Nicholas Hermitage, an officer in the American Revolution. The first settler in what is now Hermitage was Nicholas Hermitage who arrived on horseback from Maryland in 1784. He surveyed and purchased land east of present-day Center City for $3 per acre (2/4th off the then-current rate). In 1814, he donated his land to the town for free. Today, much of that original Hermitage property still stands including the old schoolhouse which still serves as a community center and meeting hall. In 1837, John Hahn founded the paper mill here which remains one of the town's most important businesses today and has been owned by families since its inception. The paper mill was destroyed by fire in 1966 but rebuilt with modern technology and reopened in 2006 as a museum with exhibits about local history and industry. The adjacent village of Spring Garden stood until 1800 when it too became part of Butler County. A new courthouse was built on Court Square between Spring Garden Road and Manor Road in 1821 which was replaced by another courthouse located near Main Street later that same year which burned down before being replaced again by a more recent structure in 1906 which still stands today as part of county government buildings complex on Market Street across from Independence Mall (now home to Wells Fargo). The first post office opened in 1827 and continued operating until 1935 when it moved to nearby Latrobe (later Parkesburg) because there were no mail facilities available within Butler County at that time. According to one source: "Hermitage Township formed on December 22nd [1837], during a special session held at Lebanon Hall." On October 20th following this date all male citizens had to be registered with their township or leave immediately; females could remain registered if they possessed property worth £10 or less per month inclusive - this practice continued until 1861 when registration privileges were extended both to males and females statewide effective January 1st! Hermitage, Pennsylvania is a small town in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The village of Hermitage was founded in 1795 and became a borough in 1853. The first settler in what is now Hermitage was Nicholas Biddle who arrived with his family on November 3, 1795 from Yorktown Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He built a log cabin on the present site of Hermitage and named it "Biddle's Grove". Later settlers included John Trimble (died 1829), Daniel Worrell (1811-1892), and Ebenezer Morse (1814-1894). They all built cabins near where they lived until after the American Civil War when most moved to larger settlements elsewhere in Fayette County or along the Monongahela River. In 1800 Samuel Weir purchased 640 acres (248 ha) within present day Hermitage Township from Ebenezer Morse for $100 cash and donated it to the Presbyterian Church as a settlement farm known as "Hermitage Manor". In 1802 Nicholas Biddle married Sarah Pryor of Erie County, Pennsylvania and they moved into their new home which they had built together on their settlement farm. Their three children were: Nicholas P., James H., and Rachel A.. The death of Rachel A.'s father in 1807 disrupted their lives somewhat but they continued to live there until his death seven years later on November 4th 1830. Thereafter James H."s wife Mary L." took over management of Hermitage Manor until her death ten years later on October 16th 1850 also leaving behind four children; Amos D.", Andrew J.", John S.", and Levi W.. On July 8th 1861 David Laughlin acquired 2 lots adjoining those owned by Salmon Peebles for $200 each towards erection of a proper courthouse & other public buildings that would serve as an example to other rural communities east of Allegheny Mountains including what is now Conshohocken Township - this land lay within present day Uniontown Borough which then adjoined Fayette County forming what is now Hermitage Township . Mr. Laughlin erected his mill race dam across North Creek on lot #2 giving rise to today’s community name “Laughlin Mill Pond”
