The USS Hermitage was a U.S. Navy cruiser that served in the Far East during World War II. She was laid down on 15 October 1942 by Bethlehem Steel Co., Quincy, Massachusetts; launched on 9 November 1942; and commissioned on 8 December 1942, Captain Alfred T. Welch in command. The USS Hermitage was assigned to the China-Burma-India Escort Squadron (CBIES) and participated in the Burma Campaign as part of Task Force 58. The HMS Audacious served as her flagship for 13 nights from 20 January to 25 January 1943 when she relieved the USS Akron which had been sunk off Amchitka Island because of enemy forces above and below water mines. After completing training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, she arrived at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan on 2 March 1943 and joined Task Group 58.1 which sailed from Leyte Gulf on 15 March 1943 for Iwo Jima where they were ordered to intercept Japanese shipping convoy KK-4 which included two battleships and twenty cruisers including the now lost Yamato." On 3 April 1944 squadron members sighted an unknown ship ahead of them while escorting reinforcement ships for Operation Cartwheel it turned out to be a JN‑28 Submarine Chaser belonging to Rear Admiral Tasuku Yamamoto's Sixth Fleet" On 6 April 1944 group continued patrols but no submarines were seen or heard during the night so they assumed there had not been any attack" On 11 April 1944 "Hermitage" Sighted a submarine surfaced about 300 yards astern with periscope down 4 degrees port then submerged again“ It soon became apparent this boat wasn't hostile however Yamamoto did order his fleet back into action against American forces ashore in Okinawa while he personally led his sub force back into action after capturing Kinugawa Reef” In 1945 "Hermitage" patrolled off Kyushu until 28 May when she left for Tokyo Bay where she operated out of Harima Port before being decommissioned 18 September 1945
Hermitage is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area. The original Hermitage Township was laid out by George Hermitage in 1792 and named for him. In 1802, it became part of Butler County. In 1812, the township was again reorganized into two parts; one including Hermitage and the other including Bellefontaine. The name change came about because residents in Bellefontaine wanted to be called "Bellefonte" after a village located just south of their town limits on Beaver Creek. In 1828, the first school in Butler County was opened in Hermitage by Rev. John Wistar and his wife Pocahontas Wistar as a girls' academy under the auspices of Staiton College (now Duquesne University). The school remained open until 1898 when it closed due to financial problems caused by increasing population density and lack of space at its original location on Grant Street east of downtown Butler City. A new school building was erected near present-day Oakmont Road and Market Street in 1896 which finally reopened in 1898 after many years of struggles from teachers, students and local boosters who saw it as an opportunity to improve education opportunities for all citizens of Butler County - something that had not been possible before because there were no factories or other businesses within reach for people to attend night classes . Thereafter, growing families increasingly took advantage of Saturday night early morning classes offered at the new building which served as both community center for small towns across western Pennsylvania during that time period as well as providing crucial educational opportunities for young children who often did not have access to formal schools throughout much OF Pennsylvania back then .
