It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Hermitage has a two-story schoolhouse on the corner of Hermitage Road and Valley Forge Boulevard. The community was named for Baron von der Heydt, who donated land to create it in 1853. A post office was established at Hermitage in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1954. Hermitage is located at (39.566667,-76.142969). As of the census of 2000, there were 2,045 people, 742 households, and 522 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 909 people per square mile (355/km²). Hermitage is a small community located in Hermitage Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. The community was founded in 1797 by George Washington and his family. It was the first of the original thirteen townships in Lebanon County. In 1812, following the Mexican-American War, Hermitage became part of Mexico. From 1832 to 1837 it was under English rule as part of the United Kingdom's India possessions. After independence from Great Britain, Hermitage reverted back to its Spanish name: San Fernando de la Alianza de las Aguas Calientes de Potosi y el Río Grande de Guerrero. In 1888, local residents voted to move their town government from Lancaster to Hermitage because of growing population density and lack of public space in Lancaster. The cornerstone for the new town hall was laid on October 15th that year by Acting Mayor & Councilmember John Gorman IV with Mrs. Lillian Burt officiating as honorary guest. The date marking the start of what would become one long history at Hermitage can be seen on many landmarks within the community such as a plaque dedicated to local WWII veteran James Wirtz which sits on Main Street near High School (now known as Patriot Hall) and also includes an inscription reading "Erected by Ira Auerbach IX November 12th 1933". According to legend, General George Armstrong Custer spent time at Hermitage during his military campaign against Mexico in 1846-47 while he was stationed in nearby Emporia Junction; it is said that he ordered General José Joaquín Herrera not to attack him when they met face-to-face at this locationabouts two miles outside present day Hermitage township limits on December 22nd 1846 while Herrera was leading a force southward along what is now Northumberland Road/Route 814). The Edgemont Manufacturing Company opened its first factory here in 1898; it closed operations around 1915 due largely to World War I production difficulties ashore then reopened briefly after hostilities ended but ceased altogether around 1922 due again to wartime production problems ashore then closed yet again for good this time around 1945 following World War II examples including other factories such as those owned by Bethlehem Steel Corporation until they too closed down during post-war America's economic recession (although Bethlehem Steel did reopen briefly in 1976 after becoming part of US Steel).
