In 1830, George Washington traded two bags of coffee beans with a Dutchman for some potatoes. In 1827, John Herschel bought land near Hermitage and set about developing it into a large plantation. He employed local workers to cultivate his crop and produced high quality coffee until his death in 1857. The town's first inhabitants were German Catholics and their families who arrived from Alsace-Lorraine in 1815. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Allegheny River and named their settlement after St. Jerome, who had died in 1453. In 1824, John Herschel became one of the early investors in what would become Penn Central Railroad (later Conrail). He donated land to build a depot on his property which served as the town's center until it burned down in 1904. The current building that houses the Borough hall was built between 1902 and 1906 by prominent local builder George Hennenberger Jr.. It replaced an earlier structure that also served as borough hall but collapsed during heavy rains in 1978. Hermitage is located at (40.83333,-75.76666).
