Hermitage is a small community in the western Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania, United States. The name comes from the word hermit, meaning "a cloistered monk." The community was founded in 1784 by John Hermitage, a Quaker minister. The village is located on Shepherdstown Creek and has a population of around 100 people. It lies within Montgomery County and is bordered to the north by Huntingdon Township, to the east by Butler Township, and to the south by York Township. The land that makes up Hermitage was first settled in what is now Huntingdon Township in 1784 by farmers who had come from Virginia after being recruited as Loyalists during the American Revolution. In 1811, Samuel Smith, an early settler in Hermitage, donated 5 acres (2 hectares) of land for a public schoolhouse and church. In 1828, settlers from Allentown moved into what was then part of Huntingdon Township and built their own log cabin on the edge of town. This became known as Hermitage Village. In 1830–31, John Fenton erected a frame building on Main Street which served as both local store and courthouse until it burned down in 1864. A post office called Hermitage was established in 1800; it remained operative until 1907. The first doctor to practice medicine there was Dr Joseph Biddle at about this time. A smallpox epidemic brought death to many residents during the late eighteenth century; however, over time vaccination increased immunity and no major outbreaks have occurred since then. Biddle's Factory operated along Sheeptown Road between Hereford Road (now State Route 614) and Plumstead Road from 1793-1802; it produced shoes for English merchants based at Philadelphia before becoming a shoe manufacturer under its own name in 1825 with J P Biddle & Sons Ltd.; also operated a tannery here between 1840-60s employing around 100 women total No records exist mentioning any Revolutionary War veterans living or working near present day Hermitage although some may have passed through due to nearby Montrose barracks during that period

Hermitage is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,502 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Hermitage were the Lenape Native Americans. The first white person to live in what is now Hermitage was John Fitzpatrick, who bought land from the Lenape in 1795. In 1802, James Krieger founded a farming community called "Hershey." In 1824, Abraham Forbes purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land near Hermitage and built a gristmill there. Forbes named his community after his family's hermitage on Mount Carmel in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. In 1881–82, George Washington Carver traveled through Butler and Allegheny counties on his way to study agriculture under Professor Joshua Laughlin at Penn State University. During this time he also visited Hermitage and made several sketches of it including one which shows a millrace and some trees along the bank of the Monongahela River. After returning toPennsylvania he donated these sketches to Penn State where they are still on display today as part of Laughlin's collection. A post office called Hershey was established in 1885, but it failed to take off and was discontinued in 1904. The Community Church located at 301 N Main Street opened its doors for services on November 15th 1888 by Rev Dr Wm Hargrave with Pastor Phebe Welsh officiating as choir leader On December 20th 1889 local citizens met at schoolhouse #2 located across from Factory #5 & decided that they would form their own village & name it Hershey Village On January 10th 1890 Hiram Soper became Mayor & reported that "the people have unanimously chosen the name 'Hermitage'." On January 12th 1890 School House #1 burned down due to an underground fire started by two boys playing with matches while wood burning inside Reverend Dr Wm Hargrave organized a Relief Committee immediately after discovering the fire
