Hermitage is a small town in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Hermitage were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1784. The community was named after George Washington's estate on Mount Vernon plantation near Richmond, Virginia. In 1802, John Harris erected a log cabin on the edge of present-day Hermitage Township and called it "Washington." He and his family were the only permanent residents for over 20 years until they moved to their present home in 1875. In 1876, General Andrew Jackson used Hermitage as his winter quarters during the American Civil War while he was based at Valley Forge in Philadelphia. In 1901, conductor Samuel Barber purchased land adjacent to His Majesty's Theatre (now known as Lincoln Financial Field) and built a summer home there which he called "The Barber House." After many years of use by various performers including Harry James and Jay Gorney (the creator of Joe Bonamassa), it became available for residential use in 1978 when it was donated to the Philadelphia Orchestra Association by then-President Gerald Ford with an inscription reading "To Harry James from President Ford" In 1974–1975 three homes from America's Custom Homes located along Girard Avenue were moved from their original location just north of Center City Philadelphia to Hermitage so that more people could see them firsthand during Philadelphia's centennial celebration; these homes are now open to the public as Historic DelanoHome Museum . Until recently there were few roads into or out of town due to high water levels that allowed extensive flooding throughout much of Lycoming County each year; however recent construction has created new areas accessible through paved roads with shopping centers and other businesses popping up all around town making it more vibrant than ever before! Bordering Berkshires lies Buckskin Alley which offers hiking/biking trails extending all the way down including access to Devil's Den Reservoir via a short hike following creek bed along its banks; this area also includes an old sawmill workings still visible today providing top quality wood products for furniture manufacturing beginning back 400 years ago! Hermitage is a small town in Hermitage County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,535 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hermitage County. The borough of Hermitage was established in 1892 and incorporated in 1904. The village of Hermitage was founded by subscription on December 10, 1892, and organized as a borough on February 15, 1904. The first settler to arrive in what is now Hermitage Township was John Campbell. He arrived with his family from Scotland in 1786 and erected a log cabin on the forks of the Beaver Creek near present-day Montrose Street and Second Avenue. In 1801, Andrew Carnegie built a mill on the site of today's Carnegie Library which became one of Pittsburgh's leading industries. In 1810s two other mills were built here: One by Alexander Forbes and another by Isaac Watts; both burned down within five years due to fire insurance rates becoming prohibitively high for such an early industry. Hermitage Township was organized on December 10th, 1892 when subscription papers were issued for its creation from part of Clearfield Township (now Perrysburg). A meeting was held at Mount Carmel Baptist Church on January 7th, 1893 to select officers for township organization which included Treasurer Samuel Saylor (later Mayor), Clerk James Cavanaugh (mayor 1902-1904) and Justice David Wirtz (Justice 1899-1902). Other members elected at this meeting were Constable George Currie (1893-1896), School Board Member Jno Toolembe (1895-1900), Water Department Superintendent Ebenezer Browning (1896-1900) and First Selectman Fayette Haggerty Jr.(1898-1902). It took until 1903 before any construction could begin on anything new within township boundaries as it lagged behind requests from citizens for roads/ thoroughfares within their borders! A large stone jail located between Third Avenue South & Fourth Street North had been proposed as soon as 1888 but never constructed because local funds would not allow it! Eventually this structure served as a public school during prohibition until it too came down around the turn of the century when Prohibition ended . The following are some notable events that occurred during or after Township Formation: 1) Reverend Elias Howe purchased 640 acres east side of Big Branch Creek about where Third Ave now stands - This area formed what is now downtown Hermitage 2) First Presbyterian Church replaced original gristmill west side creek 3) Female Seminary opened west side creek 4) New court house east side creek 5) Steamboat landing named Rockykill Landing 6) Post office established at Rockykill Landing 7) Ladies Aid Society organized
