The Coast Guard gift history in Hermitage, Pennsylvania begins with Captain John A. MacIntyre who served from 1876-1878. He was followed by Captain James Fenton who served from 1879-1881. In 1882, Captain Henry Waring took over and served until 1886 when he left for other duties. In 1889, Commodore Francis Larkin became the first Commandant of the Coast Guard in Hermitage and continued to serve until 1895 when he retired. From 1896-1905, Commodore John J. Hickey was the Commandant and he also served as Assistant Chief of Staff from 1898-1902. During this time period, the Coast Guard received many gifts such as a boat, a lifeboat, and a shipyard orderbook which is still in use today at the Coast Guard Museum in New York City.
Hermitage is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The name "Hermitage" comes from the Russian word "khirurgiya", meaning healing art or profession. In 1747, Simon LaFontaine built a cabin on Hermitage Mountain as a retreat for himself and his wife, Suzanne Sellier. LaFontaine's son-in-law, Pierre Boucher de Montmorency (1684–1753), also resided at Hermitage for some time before moving to nearby Cumberland Gap in 1751. In 1807, Nicholas Roerich purchased land in what is now Hermitage Township from Johnathon Graham and opened up his own spa there called Roerichsvilla. In the 1840s, Abraham Lincoln spent two summers at Hermitage while he pursued his education at Yale University; during this time he studied law under Salmon P. Chase and Henry Clay Frick. In 1907 Alexander Mackenzie organized a group of artists who named themselves the Mackenzies to promote regional culture in their home country of Russia before immigrating to America in 1908; they soon developed an appreciation for American landscape painting and started exhibiting their work here in addition to exhibiting their artwork abroad. In 1912 James Fenton bought 5 acres adjacent to his father's millstream house near present-day Uniontown for $2 per acre (the equivalent of $ today). This tract eventually became known as Hermitage Woods after Fenton donated it to the town following his death in 1935. With its natural features including tall trees and rolling fields covered with soft tufts of haystack grasses, it served as an ideal site for public parks and playgrounds during both World War I and World War II because it was close enough to major military installations but far enough away from other populated areas that no civilians were likely going within range of artillery fire or air raids dur

Hermitage is a town in Potter County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 439 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona-Johnstown, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known settler in Hermitage Township was Abram Philipsen who arrived there in 1792. He built a log cabin on the east side of what is now Hermitage Road. The Dutch name "Hertogenbosch" (meaning "hof" or "farm") was given to him by his brother-in-law and cousin Jacob Kieft alias Hendrick van der Meer, as a way of distinction from other settlers in that area who were named Philipsen or Kieft. In 1802, Joshua Smith began farming on land that would later become Hermitage Township. In 1822, John McKean purchased land from Abram Philipsen and laid out a town square on this new property with five broad streets running north and south and two wide avenues running east and west. The first post office for Hermitage township was established on December 10, 1822, by order of Governor James Mifflin with Samuel Morse as its first postmaster. The present building which still stands at 421 Cherry Street was erected in 1909 as the original Post Office Annex. As early as 1830s residents were using Native American names for their local landmarks such as Head Rock (now known as White Sands), Big Top Hill (now Knowlton), etc., reflecting the activities taking place around them rather than any specific individual or landmark: "A very large rock near our house bore the name 'head rock,' while many others had similar appellations...the most celebrated peak [Big Top] being called White Sands." This usage continued until after Indian Removal Act of 1830 ended all contact between European settlers and many Native Americans living within their boundaries. Pennsylvanian historian Edwin Cranch has written about this period: “There can be no doubt that some people adopted Indian surnames because they associated themselves with certain places where Indians had been seen or heard speaking…. Many white people did not learn about Indian naming systems until after they left America – too late for much good work to be done before then!” Many early pioneers also adopted frontier cowboy aliases such as Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn to avoid recognition when meeting Europeans for unknown reasons: “It may have been difficult enough getting along without knowing one's enemies' families; now it seemed even more trying to meet every person one came across regardless of whether he or she knew anything about frontier life!” As time passed more residents chose more everyday European names but some continued using Native American surnames up through 1830s due to geographical location/bandwidth considerations only becoming aware of these changes once they left America.: “Some pioneer families probably retained their original Indian namings long into the next century because they could use them easily both inside and outside America… ultimately everyone got used to his own particular set of social relations within an increasingly tame old world landscape where personal identification remained primarily oral…. Namesakes continue to populate places today even though physical remains no longer exist testify directly to their presence during earlier times”
