The United States Army's gift history in Hermitage, Pennsylvania dates back to 1814 when General Nathan Bedford Forrest offered to provide a regiment of Mounted riflemen and artillery to the Pennsylvania Militia. The first military unit in Hermitage was the 4th Regiment of Artillery which was organized on December 21, 1814. The regiment served with distinction during the Mexican-American War and were mustered out on July 9, 1846. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant offered the town of Hermitage an arsenal, making it one of the first communities in America to receive armament from a federal government. At this time, the town had 1 Arsenal and 10 gunboats that could fire 6 cannons each. In addition to its arsenal and navy vessels, Hermitage also received 12 infantry companies from Virginia who had been expelled from their state after secession. These units helped garrison Fort Snelling for Confederate forces during the summer of 1865 before being disbanded at end of hostilities. In 1870, Major General George Washington Pickett donated land for a new training ground for army officers located near what is now Camp Pickett outside of Petersburg, Virginia. This location would become known as Gettysburg because American General Robert E Lee fought there during World War II while based at nearby Weldon Johnson Air Force Base (now Whiteman Air Force Base). After World War II ended in 1945, many soldiers returning home were needed by newly formed armies so Camp Pickett became an encampment for draftees until 1960 when it was closed due to budgetary concerns associated with Vietnam Veterans Affairs programs affecting all military bases throughout America at that time. It reopened as a community center in 1995 under then Mayor John McNicholas as part of his warrior vision plan which aimed at revitalizing downtownHermitage while creating jobs within her borders through marketing initiatives such as "Heritage Days" events highlighting local arts and culture including architecture etc., electric vehicles available for rent or purchase from various businesses inside and outside city limits during Evening Market Strolls along Main Street Park like Blacksmith Shop & Grill where you can get your weapons sharpened or just chat with locals about their day-to-day lives; today still going strong! The community was founded by John Hermitage and his family in 1798 as a religious retreat for Quakers on a tract of land near the present-day town of Monroeville. In 1801, John Hermitage donated the mill to be used for agriculture and rural development; it still remains in use today. The current name of the borough was given to the community in 1909 upon its incorporation into Butler County. The borough has since grown rapidly and now includes parts of both Butler and Allegheny counties as well as parts of Westmoreland County. In 1907, John Hermitage gave $10,000 to create the Hermitage Museum which opened in 1912 with over 100 items from his collection including sketches, prints, paintings and artifacts from around the world. Today it contains more than 4500 items from across many disciplines including art history, ethnography, musicology and architecture among others.
