The town was established in 1795 by Colonel John Hazleton as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. It became an incorporated town in 1854. Hazleton is a small town in Pennsylvania, located in the eastern part of the state. The population was 5,521 as of the 2010 census. Hazleton is known for its namesake, Hazleton Mills, which are located in the town. The first settler in what is now Hazleton was Amos Hatcher, who arrived on July 10, 1798. He and his family built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the present-day town. The Hatchers were among the earliest settlers and may have named their settlement after George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. Hazleton Mills was founded by Nicholas Hazlet in 1811 as one of four mills owned by John Fenton and Andrew Gregg. One year later, Hazleton became an incorporated village under control of Philadelphia County. In 1825, it merged with nearby Easton to form another large township – Hazlet Township – with a population of 9,000 people. After World War II ended and America moved away from manufacturing because of costs associated with labor shortages overseas, hazelnut production began to resurgence in Hazleton during the early 1990s thanks to initiatives such as a Hazelnut Promotion Program that offered tax breaks to farmers who produced more than 20 bushels per acre (oltzsprung). By 2002 hazelnuts had become one of Hazleton's top economic drivers and generated over $2 million in taxable income for the township alone; this helped spur development around hazelnut plantations and other agricultural businesses that continues today through local marketing services and online sales channels
Hazleton is a town in Allegany County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 8,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Allegany County. The name Hazleton comes from French for "the hilly place". The first permanent settler in Hazleton was John Seymour who arrived in 1784 and built the first house on what is now State Street. By 1812, there were over 100 settlers living in Hazleton. During the American Revolutionary War, many of Hazleton's residents fought for the Patriots against British forces. In 1794, George Washington delivered a speech in which he endorsed the creation of a new government for Pennsylvania called Federalism with its own capital city and legislature located within state boundaries rather than Albany or Philadelphia as they were then. In 1827, when Lancaster County was created from parts of Westmoreland and York counties, Hazleton became part of Lancaster County. After the Civil War ended in 1865, much industry shifted to this area due to coal mining (then an important economic activity). The end of World War II caused most of these industries to decline but has since began to resurgence with development around Keystone Bluff nuclear power plant and other industrial projects nearby. As recently as 2000-2005 most people lived close to work or their homes; however this has begun to change with more people moving into suburbs closer to schools and shopping malls
