Hazleton is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hazleton is home to two colleges: Dickinson College and Scranton University. The first settler in Hazleton was Daniel Hogg. He built a house on what is now State Road 12 near where Patton Boulevard meets Market Street in 1824. The name "Hazzleton" was given to him by Joshua Hazlewood who had moved from Philadelphia with his family to this area in 1799. Mr. Hazleton died suddenly at age 42 in 1827 and his widow married David Forbes who settled around milepost 4 on the Susquehanna River about two miles east of Hazleton proper on land that he had bought from James Cranch for $4 sterling per acre (about $60 today). David Forbes ran a gristmill and sawmill here until 1861 when he sold it to George Aiken who operated it as an academy until 1905 when it became a fine college which it remains today - Dickinson College has been here since 1837! In 1907, Presbyterian pastor Rev John Armstrong founded Bethlehem Chapel (now Nazareth Baptist) here and soon after many more people came by carriers into Bethlehem seeking religious instruction or just some peace and solitude before going off to sell their produce or services across the commonwealth! Some of these early settlers still live right up there among us today...In 1915, after World War I ended, Hazleton's population numbered 711; its largest day-of-the-week influx occurred during prohibition efforts when 2,500 people flocked into town to buy liquor legally! By 1930, however, the population had shrunk to 598 due largely to outmigration within the local economy following industry changes throughout that decade including mines closing along with other economic hard times throughout much of Pennsylvania!. However despite these fluctuationsover timeHazletons residents have supported PennDOT programs like flood control infrastructure replacement projects and environmental education campaigns!. On November 15th of this year (2010), Hazleton celebrated its 350th anniversary - marking one half century since its incorporation as a borough!
