The Harrisburg area was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans in approximately 1681. In 1701, John Penn, an Englishman who had landed in Pennsylvania as a trader, founded the city of Philadelphia on the Delaware River. During this time, Harrisburg also played a significant role in developing American nationalism and secularism through its role as both the capital of Pennsylvania and home to several important government buildings such as Congress Hall and State House.
