The first permanent settler in what is now Harrisburg was Nicholas Harris who arrived in 1740 from Maryland. He founded a trading post on the Susquehanna River and named it for his father-in-law, Sir John Harrison. By 1800, Harrisburgh had become one of the largest settlements in Pennsylvania. In 1814, during the Mexican War, General James Ketchum defeated Mexico at Palo Alto and captured Veracruz Springs near present-day Yorktown Township in Lancaster County. After their victory over Mexico, General Ketchum gave permission to Captain Robert Morris to build a mill on Susquehanna River at what is now downtown Harrisburg. This became known as Morrisville after Captain Morris himself. In 1825, Lancaster County was created from parts of Northampton and Westmoreland counties; its capital was located at Allentown (then part of Reading). The new county included much of what is now Lehigh and Delaware counties; however, only parts of central and eastern Lehigh were within its boundaries when it formed.
