The Harrisburg Naval Shipyard was founded in 1868 as the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The yard served the United States Navy for more than eighty years, until it closed in 1978. The shipyard reopened in 1984 as the Harrisburg Naval Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. In 1986, the yard became a part of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. In 1999, Bethlehem Steel merged with JSC America, Inc., creating Brown-Nagin Company. The name change to Harrisburg Naval Shipbuilding and Drydock Company again in 2002. In 2006, Harrisburg Naval Shipbuilding and Drydock Company merged with Peconic Bay Group, LLC to form Peconic Bay Navigation Systems Incorporated.

In 1784, John Dickinson became governor of Pennsylvania and designated Harrisburg as his new capital; he named it for General George Washington who had just won an important victory over Native Americans at Yorktown that year. In 1814, during Andrew Johnson's term as president, Washington was honorably discharged from military service and moved into his presidential mansion on Main Street in downtown Harrisburg where he continued to live until his death in 1849. Harrisburg became an important transportation hub during the early 19th century because it lay at one end of what would become known as "the Great Western Railroad." This railroad connected Philadelphia with points eastward including Baltimore and New York City before terminating at Pittsburgh near modern-day Westmoreland County Line Road (Upper Clearfield Pike) in central PA northeast of Steeles Mall. Today this line forms part of Amtrak's Pennsylvestia Corridor which runs between Washington D C and Pittsburgh/Newark/Scranton along I-80/US 10 through Delaware County
