The name Harrisburg comes from English settlers who named it after Sir George Washington's home state of Virginia, where he had been born. The first Europeans to visit what is now Harrisburg were French colonists on July 4, 1681. They built Fort Duquesne on a bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River and named it for Claude duquesne, marquis de l'Isle-de-France and brother of King Louis XIV of France. In 1757, Jameson Ewing founded a small sawmill town called Charles Town on land that he donated to the government of Pennsylvania as part of his gift to that colony. He renamed it after his father, also called Jameson Ewing (1645–1710). George Washington arrived in Philadelphia on May 10, 1777, as commander of General Forbes's brigade under General John Forbes during American independence fighters' attempt to capture or capture British general Cornwallis before he could retreat back into North America with supplies and reinforcements for Crown Prince Michael II of Russia. On November 12th, 1777 Washington marched his brigade into Harrisburg from Philadelphia through Lehigh Valley towards Pemberton Heights near present-day Allentown to help garrison Fort Cumberland against possible British invasion during what became known as "The Battle of Brandywine". Afterward Washington returned home without engaging any British forces and reported that "the troops are very good" and this victory helped secure American independence from Great Britain. However some historians maintain that this engagement may have actually been fought by British soldiers not Americans because they did not achieve their objectives which were to Helmets off Crown Prince Michael II and return him safely back home while other actions taken by Washington such as disbanding Forbes's brigade may have led directly to British defeat at Brandywine without any real combat being achieved
