The first people to live in what is now Hanover Township were Native American Shawnee, who arrived in 1753. They built wigwams on the banks of the Allegheny River. In 1814, George Washington and his army passed through Hanover Township on their way to battle against British forces near Gettysburg. The town was named for Prince Frederick Augustus of Hesse-Darmstadt (1777-1858), brother of King George III of England and father of Queen Victoria. The borough was formally created by charter from parts of Point Breeze and New Kensington on November 7, 1892 as one of six towns in Allegheny County that became part of the newly created Pittsburgh metropolitan area. At its creation, Hanover had a population densityof only 2 residents per square mile (0.89 per km²). In recent years there has been an effort to revitalize downtown Hanover with new construction projects such as a brewpub and event space while also preserving older buildings that are used for commercial or institutional purposes such as the former Bethlehem Steel Plant which is now home to three different types of restaurants including Benares Pizza & Pasta and Cafe Bottega Veneta.. Hanover is a small town in Pennsylvania, United States. It is the county seat of Blair County and has a population of around 2,500. The town was founded in 1784 by George Washington as part of his survey for the new government of Pennsylvania. It became the capital of the United States in 1789 and was renamed Philadelphia after its incorporation into that state. After being moved to Washington D.C. in 1801, Hanover reverted to its original name in 1835 when it joined with Blair County to become the new district of Philadelphia-Hanover Township. In 1895, Hanover Township merged with neighboring Chester County to formPhiladelphia–Chester County Municipality. As a result of this merger, Hanover ceased to be an independent municipality and became one of 25 municipalities within Philadelphia-Fayette Township which also includes Camden, New Jersey and West Philly, Philadelphia suburbs. The majority of Hanover's commercial activity takes place within its borders: it offers a wide variety of services (including banking, insurance, real estate and transportation) as well as numerous cultural attractions including two universities (the University at Chestnut Hill and Widener University), three professional sports teams (the Eagles football team from nearby Reading Borough and baseball teams from nearby Allentown), four museums (the Delaware Museum Company Museum Annexe on Market Street; the Franklin Institute on Fifth Avenue; the Library Company Warehouse on River Street), nine bowling alleys/lanes (six located within city limits; three inside city limits plus one open 24/7) as well as several restaurants and bars offering both Americanized versions of German cuisine typical for region such as Biergarten am Heußlerhof or Schlosserbraten at Theaterhaus Königsteinhalle respectively.
