The Hanover National Guard is a volunteer organization that has been in existence since 1777. The guard was first organized into companies and then brigades, before becoming a regiment in 1881. The guard has served in various capacities throughout the years, including during World War I and World War II. In 1947, the Hanover Regiment became the Pennsylvania National Guard. The regiment currently consists of over 100 members from across Pennsylvania. On November 21, 1777 the state of Pennsylvania declared war against Great Britain and the national guard became active in support of the military effort. From December 23rd to January 2nd, 1778 the regiment stood at attention at Mr. John Penn's house in Philadelphia during the Stamp Act Crisis. On March 10th, 1779 the unit was mustered into service for three years and served under Captain James Cook as part of British forces besieging Philadelphia. In June of that year they were transferred to Gettysburg Campaign and fought at Borlaug's Hill before being disbanded on October 9th 1881.
Hanover is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Wilmington– Lebanon (PA) Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Hanover Township was made by David Levy and his family on July 24, 1765. They built a log cabin on the site of present-day Indianola Avenue and laid out a small village around it with no water source or social or political infrastructure. The earliest known settlers were members of the Levi family who served as surveyors for Berks County in the early 1800s. In 1802, John Prentice erected a sawmill on what is now Mill Street and began to produce lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1823, he married Mary Hagerty from Wilkes-Barre Township and started trading goods with Pennsylvanian farmers near their farmstead on Northumberland Road. By 1830, Prentice had several mills scattered throughout the township - one near present day Springettsville A gold discovery at Wexford Mines in 1829 led to increased traffic through Hanover Township caused by prospectors looking for new veins of ore. As business boomed, more people moved into Hanover Township including some who came from areas such as West Chester and Bethlehem where land was cheap but lack of industry kept many migrants away from settling permanently in rural areas like Hanover Township until after World War II when agricultural production took over most industrial jobs in rural Pennsylvania towns like Hebron (now Allentown), Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Lancaster (all now within Delaware Co.). The downtown area of Hanover has been around since before 1800 with only modest alterations made throughout its history – one example being that Jacob Ransom’s store moved up Market Street to take advantage of improved transportation access during the late 19th century which allowed larger quantities of goods to be transported efficiently without having to go all the way down Main Street! One reason why there has never been much development downtown other than retail is because most economic activity takes place outside of town center which is located about 10 miles west along Interstate 80 outside Reading Terminal International Airport! This allowsHanover residents plenty opportunities to enjoy all that central PA has to offer while also remaining connected via excellent public transportation options! As time passed new businesses cropped up all across central PA due mostly to internet entrepreneurs who decided you can't build an empire based upon just selling products online! However even these newer entities have seen their share of closures recently due primarily to competition from Amazon (*cough cough*EBay cough*)!!! But don't worry Central Pa's innovation scene still lives on thanks largely to companies such as Mifflin Industries(*cough*JBL*,Apple Inc.*cough*) who continue developing innovative products that solve real world problems!!!
