One of the first groups to give gifts to members of the local military were the descendants of Captain George Washington. Captain Washington’s grandson, George Washington II, donated a piece of land in 1792 for a military fortification. The fort was named Fort Cumberland after Cumberland County, Maryland. In 1816, General James Kippenberger established a post in Hanover and gave it to Colonel John Armstrong as a thank you for his help during the war with Mexico. Colonel Armstrong was rewarded with 2 acres of land west of town and another acre east of town in 1820-21. In 1825-26, Major General David Hunter donated 20 acres northwest of town for use as a military academy and barracks. The Academy eventually became West Point Military Academy in 1928. In 1850-51, Major General Ebenezer Scranton donated 10 acres northeast of town for use as an armory and barracks. The armory became Scranton Armory in 1895 and later served as the home of West Point’s Commanding General until 1970 when it was sold to East Stroudsburg University. During World War II, many people from Hanover contributed their time or money to help contribute to various branches of our Armed Forces including: Army Air Corps (1939-1945), Navy (1941-1945), Marines (1942), Coast Guard ( 1942-1945) and more recently Veterans Affairs Department contributions have included support services such as suicide prevention programs and wound care clinics throughout Central Pennsylvania since 1997!

Hanover, Pennsylvania is a small town in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona– Harrisburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot on what is now Hanover Township was Andrew Carnegie who arrived in 1825 and built a gristmill there. A post office called "Carnegie" was established in 1827, and the name change to "Hanover" in 1838 when James Witherspoon became the proprietor of the gristmill. In 1865, J.W. Pepper started an iron mine near present-day Hanover Township and began shipping ore from it to Altoona for processing into steel bars and other products. The mine closed in 1919 but left an important legacy on Hanover Township as it produced more than seventy percent of all iron exported from New Jersey during that time period. During World War II, Harry S Truman (1922-53) lived briefly in nearby Scranton beforeensonating to America's capital city Washington D C where he served as U S Senator from 1953 until 1957 when he resigned due to illness which later caused death by suicide administered by his wife Patience Rockefeller (1903-2009). In 1955, with increasing agricultural production coming online through innovations like hydraulic fracturing (fracking),Pennsylvania became one of the leading states in terms of oil production with over 20% allocation going towards fuel camellias being grown here while soybeans were also developed as a new crop after being introduced across much of central Pennsylvania starting around 2000 . With increased development came increased traffic congestion both within township limits placing strain on local infrastructure capable of handling this increase along with rural exodus making way for suburban growththus creating today’s challenges for township officials trying keep up The borough seat has been located at its current location since 1793 although Borough Hall actually date back to 1697 when William Penn granted two grants: one for “a house or freehold estate” and another for “a mill or hanover ground [that] may be used by any person whatsoever” . After many years of debate over whether or not to move the seat from its original location within township boundaries to make way for more recent development adjoining Interstate 77 , finally a decision was made at a meeting held on February 10th,. 2002 between Borough Council President Tom Koppelman (.7 immediate predecessor) Vice President Tim Boyle (.6 second term), Mayor John Fenton (.5 first term), Borough Treasurer Jeff Hickey (.4 third term), Trustee Karen Kappolito (.3 fourth term)and myself resulting in Borough Hall moving closer once again to its current site just east of I-77
