The first post office opened in Greensburg on November 1st, 1839; it was called "New Kensington". During the American Civil War Greensburg served as a garrison for General Ulysses S Grant's army during the battles of Perrysburg and Monongahela River Bridge Heights. After the war ended Greensburg resumed its role as a busy commercial center with several new businesses opening up including an ice cream parlor and grocery store soon after World War II began to boom thanks to mass production techniques developed by companies such as Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewing Company and DuPont de Nemours & Company. The first white person to live in Greensburg was George Washington Potts and his family who arrived there in 1799 from Virginia. Potts erected a log cabin on the banks of the Allegheny River and named it "Pottsville." The settlement grew quickly due to its strategic location on the river's right bank between two major transportation routes - the Susquehanna Railroad and the Erie Railroad. In 1811, James Kapp founded Kapp & Sons Watch Factory here and began producing watches. The town's rich Mineral Belt soils made for fertile farming land that produced corn, wheat, tobacco, potatoes and other crops until about 1920 when automobiles became popular in America and farming ceased to be an important factor in local life. By then, most of Greenburg had been destroyed by fire during World War II including much of Kapp's factory which still stands today as a museum dedicated to him and his contributions to Greensburg’s history
