Greensburg, Pennsylvania is a small town in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. Greensburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It falls within the Greenfield Township office boundaries. The first settler in Greensburg was John Washington who arrived in 1790 and established himself on a farm near what is now the south side of Main Street. He named his holdings "Washington's Manor" after George Washington, 1st President of the United States. In 1824, when Andrew Mellon founded Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Library system, he donated land to build a library in Greensburg which became one of America’s most prestigious public libraries. The Carnegie library building still stands and is used as a schoolhouse today by students from all around the township. In 1881, while working for Standard Oil Company as an oil inspector in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania John Waddell discovered shale gas reserves potential to be developed in this area and purchased some rights to lease these resources from Standard Oil Company for $10 per acre (4¢/acre). In 1901 he formed what would become known as Penn Gas Corporation with his partners William Findlay and James Fenton to develop this natural gas resource into a major industry in our township. One hundred years laterPennGas Corporation remains active with its headquarters located on Butler Avenue just east of Market Street in downtown Greensburg! This company played an essential role during many peak years for our economy; including two World Wars; providing jobs for locals and contributing significantly to tax revenue throughout the community! Greensburg is a small town in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,008 at the 2010 census. Greensburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1798 by George Washington and his family as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. It grew quickly due to its good location and favorable soil conditions. By 1815, Greensburg had a population of 2,000 people and became an important center for trade along the Ohio River. In 1827, Congress passed the General Land Act which granted large parcels of land to settlers in Appalachia. The act gave settlers access to natural resources and helped create new towns throughout the region. In 1847, Greensburg became home to the first high school in Sullivan County when Mellon College opened its doors there. The college later merged with Penn State University and now students from all over western Pennsylvania attend Penn State's two campuses - Greensburg Campus in PA and Chambersburg Campus in MD - as well as other colleges and universities located within Keystone State borders. During World War II, Greensburg played an important role as one of America's largest munitions plants; it produced artillery shells for Allied forces fighting in Europe. After the war ended, many of these shells were used to build roadsides around Greencastle (now Johnstown), PA which continue today as part of Interstate 78/Upper Stroudsburg Boulevard freeway project
