The United States Coast Guard was founded on May 14, 1790 by George Washington. The first officers of the Coast Guard were Captain John Fitch and Master Chief James Cook. In 1912, the Coast Guard became a service within the Department of Defense and was renamed the U.S. Marshals Service. On July 1, 1921, President Warren G Harding signed an act that created the National Defense Reserve Fleet and gave authority to the Secretary of Commerce to establish coast guard docks in each state for storage and use as needed during times of war or national emergency. After World War II, Congress passed legislation authorizing the sale of patrol boats and other equipment to interested parties such as Sweden, France, Norway and other countries who desired to operate their own coast guard forces while the U.S. government functioned as a reserve force for global defense purposes. This new era of coast guard gift history began with gifts from stateside citizens along with donations from foreign governments which included numerous vessels including submarines, aircraft carriers and MellonCorvette cutters manned by American sailors under Scandinavian command duringOperation Mermaid (1948-1949). Greensburg is a town in Cameron County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. GreenSBurg is located on the eastern border of Cameron County and contains part of the borough of Greensburg. It is also considered part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Greensburg were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present-day Monroeville and Cross Keys. In 1795, John Forbes founded Forbes Manor on land that he had acquired from Lord Dunmore for £2 per acre (0.48 km²). The Manor was adjacent to what is now downtown Greensburg, and it remains one of its most important commercial districts today. In 1821, James Fenton organized a group of farmers to build a town here as a place where they could sell their produce and be close to marketplaces in Harrisburg and Philadelphia. They named their new town GreenSBurg in honor of John Sneath, an early settler who donated land for the community's development. Mining began around this time as well; coal was discovered near present-day Monroeville in 1825 and soon became an important factor in GreenSBurg's economy. By 1860, over 100 businesses existed in GreenSBurg including several cotton mills opened by Fenton himself as well as stores, churches, hotels/motels, etc., all catering to settlers living nearby or visiting from out of state. Coal mining declined after World War II but has resumed recently with some companies extracting gasNatural gas has been extracted from shale resources here since 2007) . At one point nearly every home between Main Street eastward and US 27 had at least one telephone line; however those days are long gone because DSL services are now ubiquitous throughout much of PA due to regulations from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Today many homes still have Telephone service through old wire lines still running along street corners - keep that up!
The Coast Guard gift history goes back to the earliest days of the agency. In 1916, a group of businessmen in New York City decided to form a volunteer force to help protect the coast. The first Coast Guard unit was organized on December 1, 1916 and its members were called the "Plymouths." The name was chosen because they were needed to man small boats used for patrols along the New England coast. In 1921, Congress passed the Emergency Powers Act which gave the Coast Guard additional power to deal with emergencies on the U.S. coastline. This law allowed for the creation of special detachments within each Coast Guard district and also authorized spending up to $3 million per year for new equipment and supplies. During World War II, coastal defense was one of the main tasks of the Coast Guard. The service distributed more than 100,000 rifles, shotguns, mortar rounds and other weapons to troops stationed along America's coasts. After World War II ended, Coast Guardsmen continued their coastal protection duties through various peace-time periods including during both Vietnam and Katrina (a natural disaster that struck New Orleans in 2005). Greensburg is a small town in Potter County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. GreenSBurg is one of the oldest towns in Potter County and was chartered on July 25, 1787. The first store in Greensburg was built by Alexander Stewart and his father-in-law John Armstrong. From 1827 to 1830, Greensburg had two post office buildings: one on High Street and one on Court Street. In 1837, the first railroad line arrived in rural Potter County and led to the growth of Greensburg. By 1860, there were 10 businesses located in Greensburg with a total payroll of $1 million. In 1870s & 1880s much of what is now downtown Greensburg was developed as housing for workers employed by local farmers who grew crops such as wheat, corn, potatoes and hay. The city's heyday came during World War II when it became an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location near Pittsburgh and its ample supply of natural gas resources. However postwar growth has slowed down since then as major factories have left or been closed down throughout Pennsylvania; however some new heavy industry has started up including green building materials companies such as TerraCotta Technology LLC.,[3] aluminum smelters,[4][5] oil refineries,[6][7][8] software development companies such as Scrum Incorporated.,[9][10] homebuilders such as Lennar Corporation.[11][12][13] Today GreenSBurg remains a small town with closeknit community members who are proud of their history and culture which includes many remnants from pioneer days including early Methodist church services being conducted outdoors under apple trees until finally indoor arenas were built nearby in the 1960s (the original football field still exists).[14]:p191 It also retains many cultural artifacts that date back centuries like handmade baskets made from various plants found along Route 9 outside town limits,[15]:p92 As well as items made from local pottery collected over time like bowls, dishes or figurines
