It is part of the Wheeling-Erie metropolitan area. The first army deployments were on October 12, 1861 when two companies from West Virginia's 9th US Infantry Regiment were sent to duty in support of Union forces besieging Fort Sumter in South Carolina. On October 14th, 1861, three more companies arrived and replaced the ones that had left for South Carolina; these arriving companies were from New York (2nd Battalion), New Jersey (1st Battalion) and Pennsylvania (3rd Battalion). These regimentals served until January 1865 as part of General George Meade's Army of Northern Virginia. Army deployments have continued sporadically through West Virginian history with only 2 detachments being deployed for every 10 years since World War II ended. In 1948 there was an deployment for 1 month to help quench shortages caused by Korea War hostilities; this deployment was followed by another 1 month deploytion in 1956 for president Eisenhower's inauguration parade riots. The last time an army deployment occurred in Greensburg was on July 15th 1990 when nine soldiers from 4 battalions from Kentucky were sent to help with security during the Republican National Convention that took place in Greensburg that week. Greensburg, Pennsylvania is a city in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,975 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Greensburg was founded in 1794 by German immigrants as Ephrata Township and became a town in 1827. The name "Greensburg" comes from the word "greens" meaning 'a meadow with tall grasses' and "burgh" meaning 'town'. The first settler in Greensburg was Nicholas von Kappenstall who arrived there on November 20, 1794. Von Kappenstall built an earthenwareworks near what is now Market Street and named it Kappenstall's Mills after himself and his brother-in-law Johann Friedrich Muhlenberg (1754-1828). In 1827, the township became a borough when it merged with the neighboring borough of Monroeville to form the City of Pittsburgh. The main industries that have been located in Greensburg include papermaking and textiles; agriculture has also been a significant force here for many years including cattle breeding, brewing beer, chicken farming and pork production; however, aluminum smelting began to take off here during the early 21st century as a result of new technology used to produce aluminum products such as car parts and cans. Today's downtown features several restaurants and bars as well as an arts district with theaters including one affiliated with Carnegie Mellon University which reopened its doors following a $25 million renovation project in 2013. Greenfields Park provides public access to both nature trails through woods adjacent to town limits while also providing golf course access within minutes' walk of downtown Blvd., making this an ideal place for residents to enjoy activities surrounding their city center without havingto leave their comfortable neighborhoods inside town limits!
