In 1893, Naval Station Cumberland became Headquarters for the Philadelphia Navy Yard and the Town of Franklin Park annexed by Philadelphia. On December 12, 1904 a detachment of three destroyers from Boston City Lights served as auxiliaries during a hurricane season storm near Cape May NJ. Theodore Roosevelt served as Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet from 1909-1913 and Pedro Pires de Azevedo was Commandant General at Portsmouth NH Navy Yard from 1915-1920. Admiral John J McCain commanded Destroyer Squadron Nine (DesRon 9) during Operation Neptune’s Spear in 1990 when Saddam Hussein’s Iraq threatened Kuwait with attack; he received his decoration for this action at Dover Naval Air Station on October 26, 1990. Franklin Park is a small, rural community in the heart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The park was founded in 1892 by General John A. Franklin, who donated land to the town in memory of his father and other notable Pennsylvanians. The area now comprising Franklin Park was originally part of the Township of Greenfield. In 1907, the township were merged into the City of Pittsburgh and Franklin Park became part of its boundaries. The park has been home to many famous people including: President George Washington; Prime Minister James Kempton; Steelers linebacker Jerome Bettis; actor Robert Wagner; and author Poul Anderson. In addition, many famous events have taken place at or around Franklin Park such as the 1984 Summer Olympics which took place on site and the 1988 Winter Olympics which took place nearby at PPG Place.
Franklin Park was established in 1811 as part of the Township of Franklin. The first settler to move into the park was James Forbes, who purchased a tract of land from the government for $1,000. In 1820, the township and park were consolidated into one municipality under the name of Franklin Park. The first mayor of Franklin Park was John Hogg. The current mayor is Jim Kenney. The park is named after Benjamin Franklin, who owned most of what is now Franklin Park. A plaque located at the entrance memorializes both Benjamin Franklin and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge gave money to help create the park.
