The shipyard was first established in 1881 as the Erie Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. It became an operational naval shipyard under the command of Rear Admiral John F. Holland in 1912. The shipyards produced over 1,000 ships during World War II, including 11 Victory Ships and dozens of submarines. The yard also produced millions of dollars worth of munitions and equipment for the war effort. After the war, the navy mothballed many of its warships at the yard until it finally closed it down in 1967. However, that didn’t mean that navy gifts were forgotten about in Erie. The USS Lexington (CV-2) was sunk by Japanese forces during World War II, and her crew were taken prisoner of war. The USS Yorktown (CV-8) was also sunk by Japanese forces during World War II, and her crew were also taken prisoner of war. The USS Monmouth (LZ-71) made an emergency landing on Shimonoseki Island after developing engine problems off Okinawa. She was then transferred to Japan for repairs. On October 2, 1945, she returned to the US Navy under the name Yorktown LST-677. She served as a transport ship until she was decommissioned on September 1, 1946. The USS Enterprise (CVN 70) arrived in Erie in 1944 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to capture or sinking numerous submarines operating off Japan's coast. She served as flagship of Task Unit 8givetlanding at Hoshino Bay before being converted into an amphibious assault ship and serving in various campaigns including Leyte Gulf and Okinawa campaigns where she earned three battle stars and two Presidential Unit Citations. In 1970 she recommissioned as flagship for Commander Sixth Fleet during the Vietnam War campaign known as "The New Frontier." After returning home in 1972 Enterprise served briefly with Commander Seventh Fleet before being sold to Greece on November 15th 1974 and renamed Pireus[1] She completed restoration works at Piraeus Shipyard before recommissioning thereon on July 29th 1975[2] As Pireus again serving with Commodore Seventh Fleet until January 1978 when she sailed for Spain [3]She decommissioned thereon February 11th 1978[4]. Erie, Pennsylvania is a small city in the western Pennsylvania region of the United States. Erie became an incorporated city on January 1, 1827, after being chartered by the General Assembly as a village on December 12, 1825. The population was 54,362 at the 2010 census. The city is located in western Erie County and has a total area of 20 square miles (50 km2). Erie is one of five cities in Erie County that together form the Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The other four are Buffalo, New York; Hamburg, Germany; South Bend, Indiana; and Aurora-Muncie, Indiana.

The Erie Canal was a major transportation artery in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The canal connected the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean, making it an important route for trade and commerce. Erie was founded by Dutch colonists in 1721 as a port on the Great Lakes. When Lauriaen Block built his sawmill on the shore of Lake Erie, he decided to establish a town around it. In 1725, Erie became part of Pennsylvania after George Washington's victory at Yorktown. The first settlers in Erie were primarily farmers and traders who worked together to build the canal system. The growth of Erie led to increased traffic on the canal system, which caused problems with water availability. In 1814, Congress approved plans to build a new canal that would make more efficient use ofriver water resources. The new canal was completed in 1825 and allowed faster shipping rates between Buffalo, New York and Liverpool, England. This helped make Erie one of the most important commercial centers in North America during its time period
Erie was first settled in 1795 by the Eries who were part of the Iroquois Confederacy. The area now known as Erie was part of Pennsylvania until 1800 when it became a part of Ohio. In 1851, Erie became a municipality within the newly formed United States of America and has remained that way ever since. The city is named after George Washington and was built on what is now called the Washington Park neighborhood.
