Erie, Pennsylvania is a town in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 51,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Erie County were the Lenape people. They built their first permanent homes in 1795 and stayed until 1813 when they moved to a new location on the Susquehanna River. The community of Sauksville was founded by them in 1820. In 1849, the western border of Erie County was finalized when Cumberland Township became part of the county while still being separate from Erie. In 1875, Friendship Township (later known as Northumberland Township) merged into Erie County as well; this left Sauksville as the only village remaining within Erie County after its merger with neighboring counties. In 1893, two brothers named John Diller started an agricultural machinery company that would become one of America's leading companies for many years to come: Diller-Hamilton Manufacturing Company Incorporated (DHM). The company grew rapidly and soon became one of local landmarks with more than 100 employees across three plants in downtown Buffalo and rural communities throughout southwest Pennsylvania and northwestern Ohio including Perrysburg and Canonsburg which are located just east of present day Erie City on Butler Lake. During World War II DHM produced munitions for both Allied and Axis forces under contract through its subsidiary American Machine & Foundry Co., Ltd.. After hostilities ended DHM operations shifted back to Buffalo where production resumed in 1945 before ceasing again in 1949 following the war’s end. TodayDHM manufactures engines and other industrial equipment products under its own name as well as parts for other companies worldwide through a network of subsidiaries
