The Coast Guard Gift History in Erie, Pennsylvania began with the organization of the Erie Volunteer Fire Department on November 3rd, 1879. The first captain of the volunteer department was Andrew J. MacDonald and his gift to the department was a boat (the “Andy”) that he had built himself from a riverboat. Captain MacDonald also gave away many items, including a set of lifejackets and a kitesurfing board. In 1909, Captain John B. Crouse donated an engine and tender to the department which became known as the “Crouse-Langdon’s”. In 1927, Captain John A. Stevenson donated two coast guard cutters – one named the “John D. Kelly” and one called the “Sweeney” – which were later renamed both “Erie Coast Guard Cutters 1 & 2″ in honor of their respective captains/commanders/chiefs who originated these vessels within our service. Additionally, in 1941 Commander Frederick Ewing gifted two sets of lifejackets to our firefighters while they were fighting in World War II; these lifesavers continue to be given annually today by members of our community during Memorial Day ceremonies throughout Erie County! Erie is one of the oldest towns in Pennsylvania and it was first settled by English colonists in 1795. Erie is located on the southern bank of the Buffalo River and includes most of what is now Delaware County as well as parts of Wayne, Butler and Clinton Counties. The town began to grow rapidly after its incorporation as a borough in 1802 and soon became one of the largest cities in western Pennsylvania. In 1907 Erie was made the capital city of what would become the United States. Today, Erie remains an important center for commerce and education with many high-quality universities and businesses within its borders.

Erie is a city in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 23,547 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to explore what is now Erie were French traders and explorers who arrived in 1614. They named the area "New France" after their new discovery there. In 1718, General George Washington passed through Erie on his way from New York City to Philadelphia and recommended that the fledgling United States build a military road through the area so that goods could be transported more efficiently between points west. Congress approved this project and construction began soon thereafter. When Erie was incorporated as a town on April 15, 1825, it had a population of only 1,500 people. It grew rapidly during the next few years as developers built many homes and businesses near the river for flood control and other purposes. By 1830, Erie had become one of Pennsylvania's most populous towns with over 10,000 residents! In 1841-42, local farmers began to produce maize (corn) for export to Mexico City; this led to increased business activity in downtown Erie and helped make it one of the most important commercial districts in Pennsylvania at that time! During World War II much of the manufacturing industry within easy walking distance of downtown closed down due to wartime production shortages but some larger companies did continue until well into postwar times including JCPenney(now Macy's). Downtown Erie experienced some residential expansion during this time as newer housing became available around Market/ boulevard/elfth avenue which ran east-west along Canisteo Street near where today's State Street meets Niagara Boulevard

In 1814, Erie was incorporated as a city and soon developed into one of the most significant manufacturing centers in Pennsylvania. However, during the late 1990s and 2000s economic decline caused many jobs to be lost in Erie and other Pennsylvania cities.
