The Erie Army National Guard was founded in 1814. The unit has served in a variety of capacities throughout its history, including the United States military during World War II and the present day. The Erie Volunteer Infantry Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on October 25, 1861, at Erie, Pennsylvania, and mustered into service on November 3. It was composed of men from Erie County. The regiment was attached to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, IX Corps (also called the Western Reserve Force), Army of Northern Virginia. On December 12, 1861, it relieved the 2nd Brigade in that brigade's divisional advance upon Mechanicsburg; on January 17 it took part in an attack against Bedminster; and on February 15 it participated in an assault against Fredericktown. The regiment lost its commanding officer on March 20th when he died of wounds received two days earlier at Fredericksburg. On April 14th 1862 the 1st Brigade transferred from IX Corps to IV Corps under General Ulysses S. Grant and became part of that corps' left wing for operations along the Potomac River pending an attack upon Antietam Creek which had been ordered by General Robert E. Lee as one of his final preparations for invading Maryland Heights preparatory to crossing into northern Virginia. On Saturday night September 9th 1862 while leading elements forward they were involved in a cavalry action near Westover Millsboro just short of town where three men were killed and ten others wounded including lieutenant colonel John Gadier who later awarded posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor for this engagement In November 1863 I Company joined Battery A (5-inch Howitzer) unit #2 (7th New York Volunteers) battery located at Ford's Ferry east side Va & north side Pa Canal

Erie was founded by Dutch farmers in 1714 as a small trading post on the Great Lakes shoreline. By 1800, it had a population of 10,000 and became one of the major iron-producing centers in America. Despite this prosperity, industrialization and mechanization destroyed much of Erie's industry during the 20th century; however, today Erie remains an important manufacturing center with businesses such as Unilever and Carrier Corporation located there.
